It was reincorporated (1897) as the Union Pacific Railroad Company in Utah, and under the management of Edward H. Harriman the railroad was expanded, vastly improved, and stabilized.
The Union Pacific acquired the Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific RRs in 1982 and M-K-T RR in 1988.
Today the railroad, with around 33,000 mi (53,000 km) of track in the West, Midwest, and Gulf Coast regions, is a subsidiary of the highly diversified Union Pacific Corporation; in 1999 the corporation split the railroad operation into three semiautonomous units (for the northern, southern, and western sections of the system).

With the Missouri Pacific as a foundation, Gould then welded together a great network of rail lines known as the "Southwest System" In 1880, five other smaller western railroads were consolidated with the Missouri Pacific, and in 1881 control of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern was acquired.
In 1885 the management of the Texas and Pacific was separated from that of the Missouri Pacific, and in 1888 the lease of the Katy railroad properties was terminated, a move which divorced the I-GN from Missouri Pacific control.
Jenks as president of the Missouri Pacific in 1972 and was elected chief executive officer of Mo-Pac in 1974.

 Union Pacific Railroad
The Union Pacific was chartered by Congress, through the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862, to construct a portion of the first transcontinental line, starting in Omaha and proceeding westward through the Platte River Valley.
The Union Pacific was forced into receivership during the depression of the 1890s, but was brought back to prominence by E.H. Harriman.

Perlman came to Western Pacific after a long and distinguished railroading career which included service for the Denver and Rio Grande Western, the New York Central and the Penn Central and was recognized as one of the foremost railroad executives in the nation.
Western Pacific's independent corporate existence however may be said to have terminated on January 11, 1983 when at a meeting of the Company's Board of Directors action was taken to confirm the Company's status as a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad Company.

The Southern Pacific Railroad was one of the largest and most influential railroads in the west.
Southern Pacific recognized the need for such a line to expedite the movement of eastward moving traffic originating in Oregon after the completion of the original north-south mainline through the Siskiyou Mountains in 1887.
In 1963 SP obtained trackage rights on the Western Pacific Railroad mainline from Flanigan to Weso (near Winnemucca), NV, a move which allowed for the abandonment of the line from Flanigan to Fernley.

These two railroads along with the lines comprising the Sunset Route in Texas all had their roots in the antebellum period and include the oldest components of the Southern Pacific system.
The last of the antebellum railroads, the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf, was combined with the Indianola Railroad Company on April 22, 1871, to form the Gulf, Western Texas and Pacific.
The Southern Pacific also owned several railroads in Mexico, the longest of which was the Southern Pacific Railroad of Mexico, which ran from Nogales on the Arizona-Sonora border to Guadalajara.

The railroad was founded as a land holding company in 1865, forming part of the Central Pacific Railroad empire.
Like most railroads, the SP painted the majority of its steam locomotive fleet fl during the 20th century, but after the 1930s the SP had a policy of painting the front of the locomotive's smokebox light silver (almost white in appearance), with graphite colored sides, for visibility.
The Central Pacific Railroad (and later the Southern Pacific) maintained and operated a fleet of ferry boats that connected Oakland with San Francisco by water.

It was the first railroad to serve Kansas City, reached in 1865, after construction was interrupted by the American Civil War.

The idea for a transcontinental railroad "to shrink the continent and change the whole world" was first proposed by men of imagination in 1830.
In 1864 thousands of Chinese in Kwantung Province were recruited by Central Pacific Railroad Co. to work on the western portion of transcontinental railroad.
The roadbed was blasted out of the solid rock mountainside in the fall of 1865 by lowering Chinese workers (also known as "Celestials" after the "Celestial Kingdom" as these tireless workers referred to their homeland) on ropes down the sheer cliff face.

The Alton and Pacific was a 24" gauge steam railroad operated from 1968 until 1989 by Frank Bayliss, a Los Angeles native and lifelong railfan.
At some point Frank Bayliss bought it for the Alton and Pacific, where it remained on display until 1992, when it was acquired by the Northern Counties Logging Interpretive Association, who have it in indefinite storage.
The Alton and Pacific rails were extended almost to the mill, but revenue trains never operated out that mile or so before the operation ceased.
