  Phouka Dog Pages: Pack Hierarchy
The dogs see their position simply as "we are one pack united", humans tend to think "we are one family and a few dogs".
The highest ranking dog or human is granted the most privileges by the rest of the pack and becomes the pack leader, the less persistent less dominant individuals slide down the ranks in order of ability to be persistent and/or dominant and have either fewer privileges or none at all.
From watching the interaction between our 'pack' I have concluded that the pack leader is the human or dog which holds the greatest respect from each and every member of the pack, carries the weight of responsibility for the entire pack and has the largest 'Bill-of-Rights'.

Using an ice pack to stop canine seizures
This article on using an ice pack to stop seizures is about an exciting new technique that has recently been published in a leading veterinarian journal.
This technique may be able to help you shorten or even stop your dog's seizure before it begins, and may even help reduce the amount of post-ictal recovery time, and to return your dog to full functioning more quickly.
The article also indicated that dogs with cluster seizures are a special case and may need their usual protocols after the seizure, so if your dog is a clusterer, follow your veterinarian's instructions for using valium or write to our website for the rectal and oral valium protocol.

Dog packs should only be used if your companion animal is comfortable and willing to take the added load on her back.

 Canine Behavior Center
One thing that does remain the same today, in both the wolf and the canine, is the need to have a strong, stable, and organized pack.
Pack stability, strength and organization comes from a calm assertive pack leader setting the code of behavior for the pack to follow.
A dog that doesn't trust its human to be a good pack leader becomes unbalanced and often exhibits unwanted or anti-social behaviors.

Canine communication can be so subtle, and their sensory perception is so vastly different than ours that our efforts to imitate their specific physical interactions are largely doomed to fail.
Dogs and humans who waste time continually blustering to establish their position within the pack, who are not fair and consistent, who waste energy correcting trivial infractions, who can't effectively get a pack to follow their direction are dogs and humans who will not be successful.

Aggression   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-03)
Ritualistic aggression is used to maintain the pack hierarchy and is an inherent part of the dog’s psyche.
What we view as canine aggression is in fact a natural competition within the pack for resources such as food, pack rank, the right to breed, or even what a canine might perceive as its very survival.
Canines are incapable of thinking like us; therefore we must learn to understand the natural instincts and behaviors that dictate their lives.

 Dog Owner's Guide: Canine Teeth
Since puppy teeth serve as a primary tool for examining their environment, for greeting pack members, and for testing the pack hierarchy, and since puppies also grab things to relieve the discomfort of teething, some early lessons in bite inhibition are necessary.
Although dogs don't generally hear the call of the wild to hunt and kill their meals, they have the teeth for seizing, tearing, and crushing and the instinct to use those teeth for defense, social bonding, and chewing.
Pet owners who understand canine behavior can teach their dogs to use their teeth in a manner acceptable in the human-canine pack while they keep watch on the health of those teeth.

The Dynamics of Canine Pack Structure
Watching dogs wrangle to work out their pack structure can frazzle our nerves to the point we feel driven to abort the process any way we can.
This occurs because canine pack-establishing and predatory behaviors occur on the same continuum, with the former being a less energetic version of the latter.
If Crisco's owner feeds a lot of sound, motion, and other stimuli into the process, the two dogs who under calmer circumstances would just try to hold each other by the neck may be driven to sink their teeth into each other as deeply as they would if they were attacking prey.

 Canine Body Language
Since dogs are, by nature, pack animals, it stands to reason that they must be able to communicate effectively in order to prevent misunderstandings between pack members.
Your dog should regard you as the pack leader or "Alpha" and should display a submissive attitude to you and your family.
A dog that will not accept this position could turn aggressive and dominant to a degree where it is likely to be uncontrollable and/or dangerous.

Although your new cute fluffy puppy or sweet adorable rescue dog seems like it is just the cutest thing in the world, the bottom line is that they are domesticated, evolved and selectively bred from wolves, foxes, and possibly jackals and coyotes.
When the PACK LEADER or ALPHA is done, they give permission for the lower ranking members to then proceed, and not until they are given a go ahead.
If your dog does not perceive you as the pack leader, he or she is instinctually wired to take on that job.

The successful trainer has to establish himself as the "alpha" or "top" dog of his pack early in the training relationship It's much easier to do this when the pup is young rather than to wait until the pup is a year or two old and then challenge his behavior.

However, a "personality profile" aiming to help tell the reader which "drive" (prey, pack or defense) most motivates a given dog has pop appeal, but offers little beyond the obvious; you don't need to be Konrad Lorenz to know what motivates your own dog.
The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen program was developed to promote responsible dog ownership in a manner that would be easy for both dog and owner.
