  Encyclopedia: Package management system
A package management system is a collection of tools to automate the process of installing, upgrading, configuring, and removing software packages from a computer.
Packages often include other important information, such as the full name, version, and vendor of the software, checksum information, and a list of other packages, known as dependencies, that are required for the software to run properly.
Package management systems are charged with the task of organising all of the packages installed on a system and maintaining their usability.

RPM Package Manager - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RPM Package Manager (or RPM, originally called "Red Hat Package Manager") is a package management system primarily intended for Linux.
However, note that package label is contained within the file and does not necessarily need to match the name of the file.
When using packages that are from a particular distribution (say Red Hat) or built for a particular distribution (for example Freshrpms [1] for Red Hat), then automatic dependency checking can work, using tools such as yum or apt (see below).

Slackware's package management system is often cited as a weakness of the Slackware distribution compared to other distributions such as Red Hat and Debian.
Slackware's package system is fairly robust and useful, however it does lack certain features such as the ability to check for dependencies.
Most Solaris packages are distributed in a gzipped tar archive, although there is an option to make a package into a 'stream' which is basically similar to a tar archive in that it is a single file composing a stream of data which may normally comprise multiple files.

Package Management: How to Do It?
The process of building a package for RPP was such that there was no way to ensure the executable programs were built from the source code contained in an RPP source package.
As people started using RPP, it became obvious that the package managers that were unable to simplify the process of building packages for more than one architecture, or type of computer, were going to be at a disadvantage.
While the approach of dedicating a database to package management was a good idea, the implementation used in RPM version 1 left a lot to be desired.

In the real world, there are many different package management systems, and it would be impractical to impossible to abandon a vendor-supplied package management system in favor of another (would Red Hat, for instance, even consider supporting a "Red Hat Linux" system that didn't use RPM to manage software packages?).
We need an extensible system that can talk to all common package management systems and can provide a single interface to all common package management system functions (install, uninstall, list, check/verify, etc.).
I think such a system is possible, and preferable to trying to find a single, ultimate package management system.
