Studebaker-Packard Hawk series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Packard's V8 was now unavailable, so the Golden Hawk was fitted with Studebaker's largest 289 in³ V8, supercharged to produce the same power output.
The range was simplified; the Sky Hawk was discontinued as too close to the Golden Hawk, while the two lowest models were replaced with a single Silver Hawk model, available with either the straight-6 or 259 cubic inch (4.2 L) V8.
The Silver Hawk served as a useful showroom draw, and it was continued; since it was the only Hawk model left, it was renamed simply the Studebaker Hawk and continued under that name through the end of 1961.

Packard Hawk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Packard Hawk was one of a range of four models of automobile produced in the final year of Packard production.
Packard's plant in Utica, Michigan had been leased to Curtiss-Wright (and would be soon sold to them) and Packard models in this dying-gasp year were rebadged and retrimmed Studebaker products.
The Packard Hawk was essentially Studebaker's Golden Hawk slightly reshaped and repackaged.

Studebaker Silver Hawk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Studebaker Silver Hawk was an automobile produced between 1957 and 1959 by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana.
The Silver Hawk was the replacement for the two lower models in the four-model Hawk range in 1956, the Flight Hawk with six-cylinder Champion power and the Power Hawk with the Commander's 259 in³ (4.2 L) V8.
In appearance, the Silver Hawk was a simplified version of the Golden Hawk, the upper of the two Hawk models in 1957-58.

Packard -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Founded by James Ward Packard and William Dowd Packard, legend has it that the Packard brothers were unhappy with the automobiles they had purchased from other makers, and James Packard, a mechanical engineer, had some ideas how to improve the design.
Packard's up-again and down-again sales continued, with a profitable year in 1955 followed by a disastrous 1956, which saw production drop to its lowest levels since World War I. Packard had been selling engines and transmissions to American Motors, but a parts dispute ended this arrangement in April of 1956.
Packard had a good engineering staff that always designed good engines which were made well.

Originally based in the Packards' hometown of Warren, Ohio, the factory was moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1903, after a majority of stock was purchased by a Detroit-based group of investors led by Henry Bourne Joy and his brother-in-law, Truman Handy Newberry.
When it merged with Studebaker in 1954, Packard was one of the last remaining independent U.S. automakers.
The Packard Motor Car Company factory complex, designed by Albert Kahn, included the first use of reinforced concrete for industrial construction in the city of Detroit.

The Studebaker Hawk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The 1956 Hawks were a natural development from the 1953-55 coupe and hardtop (C and K bodies) models.
Most noticeable of these changes were a squared rear roof line, moving the stainless steel trim strip from the side of the body to a line that stretched from just behind the headlights to the tip of the rear finder, and deleting the tail fins that had by now fallen out of favor.
The 1963 and 64 Hawks were cosmetically similar to the 62 with minor changes to the headlights (painted bezels) and the grille and side (nostril) air openings (mounted flush and a finer grille work).

The parking lights were mounted on top of the front fenders and with the modest fiberglass fins adorning the rear fenders, the 1956 Golden Hawk provided the driver with excellent judgement visibility for parking or maneuvering in tight spaces.
Although similar to Hawk models of other years, many body and trim parts are unique to 1956 Hawks only, and some exclusively to the 1956 Golden Hawk.

 McCulloch Road Tests
The line that separates the Golden hawk from the super stocks is indeed fine but unmistakable; Golden Hawk performance may be purchased “as is” without resorting to a long list of sometimes unobtainable power plant options.
Standard equipment on all ’57 Hawks are dual exhausts and the “Jet Stream” supercharger, a new name for an old friend of hot rodders, the McCulloch variable ratio centrifugal blower, which accounts for the use of relatively low compression ratios.
The Hawk tested was not the hottest model checked this year, but it was far from the slowest.

1957 and 1958 Packards - Enpsychlopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In order to produce an engine of appropriate power for a Packard, a McCulloch-supercharged version of Studebaker's 289 in³ (4.7 L) small-block V8 was used, giving 275 bhp (205 kW), equivalent to the Packard engines in use the year before (and likewise used in the Studebaker Golden Hawk).
Four Packard models were sold; a 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop coupe, a 4-door station wagon, and the Packard Hawk, a modification of Studebaker's Golden Hawk with the fishmouth Packard grille.
The regular Packards (sedan, hardtop and wagon) bore no series names, although the hardtop was occasionally referred to as the "Starlight," a name used primarily on the similar Studebaker Commander and President hardtops.

All Golden Hawks are getting hard to find, but this example is among the most desirable since it is equipped with the rare stick shift, overdrive transmission.
While the Packard Ultramatic is a nice transmission when properly maintained and adjusted, it has a spotty reputation in the Golden Hawks.
It is expensive to repair, shops that understand it are few and far between and while it worked well in the more sedate Packards, it was a poor choice for the brutal acceleration that the big 352 cu.in engine delivers in the lighter Golden Hawk.

The cars design was unique and completely unforgettable - a wide mouth grille and other features like exterior leather arm rest along the side windows, a spare tire outline on the rear deck, and gaudy gold mylar inserts for the flared tailfins.
The controversial styling of the Packard Hawk has always obscured the fact that it was the fastest production Packard ever built.

The '58' Hawk was a pastiche of European styling cues.
Inspired by the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes, it boasted tan pleated leather hide, uniquely exterior vinyl armrests, running along the side windows, white on fl instruments, Jaquaresque fender vents, a turned metal dashboard, gulpig hood air-scoop, and a broad fiberglass shovel-nostril that could have been lifted off a Maserati.
