Patent 5485453: Method for handling redundant switching planes in packet switches and a packet switch for carrying out ...
The data packet switch of claim 21, wherein the quality determining unit generates, in response to an incorrectness associated with a data packet received from one of the switching planes, a quality value for that switching plane that is worse or lower than a previously generated quality value for that switching plane.
Having a redundancy in the switch, for instance with parallel switching planes, this means that the same data packet in the different planes is not available at the same time at the output port of the switch, where the redundancy is terminated, that is in the connection point of the parallel switching planes.
Since normally a sequential number is added to the data packet in the transfer thereof in a packet switch, the sequential number may be transferred from the buffer at the output port to the quality determination unit for evaluation of the sequential correctness of the packet.

 Patent 4491945: Fast packet switch
A packet switch according to claim 40 wherein said second one of said pair of shift registers comprises said plural output means and is operative in response to digital signals from said register output for sequentially shifting said packet start, address and data digital signals successively to each of said plural output means.
The switch comprises a plurality of input control circuits each of which is connected to an individual one of the input terminals and a plurality of output control circuits each of which is connected to an individual one of the output terminals.
This is necessary for the modularity of all packet switch node operations and for speed of packet switching since the input control circuits always base their selection on the two most significant bits of the address and do not have to delay their switch actions which would otherwise occur without the rotation.

Patent 4575864: Digital programmable packet switch synchronizer
The method recited in claim 3 wherein the number of stored bits of said digital data stream and the number of said stored blanker bits is each equal to the number of bits in said unique digital data word.
Packet communication networks are rapidly becoming a major vehicle for the transmission of digital data.
When circuit 10 detects the unique digital word in the data stream, the output of gate 114 is driven high and this state is latched by circuit 116 which then provides an output signal to a line 118.

You can switch to a smaller description if you are more experienced, by using the command BRIEF.
Typing SCORE tells you not only how many points you have got, but also how much experience you have, using ratings which range from novice, the bottom level, up to wizard, of which (witch?!) there were two when I played.
This is far too complex to explain here, and would really warrant an article in itself, but the general idea is that you can contact the Essex computer using special data lines, specifically designed for the transmission of data, not voices.

Essex MUD was the game that started it all, originally started in 1980 by Roy Trubshaw during his final year at Essex University, the game has gone from strength to strength.
The game is free to play, although you will need access to a PSS (Packet Switch Stream) PAD to log-on.
The game is fairly slow, partially due to the ancient DEC-10 hardware it is running on, and partially due to the packet switching that PSS does, still it's free, and a fun game - although puzzle solving at 3 in the morning can be tough to say the least!

The data transported by X.25 may be fragmented over X.25 Layer 3 packets via a MORE-bit mechanism, whereby a bit in the X.25 Layer 3 header indicates that the data contained in the X.25 Layer 3 packet is incomplete and must be reassembled with the succeeding packet.
A data packet which the bridge or router functionality is outputting through an X.25 interface is first fragmented by the following fragmentation routine invoked from the X.25 driver output routine.
Of course, there may be security problems with broadcasting IP packets, and if the destination host never sends a reply, the source host would never learn a physical address to use in association with the destination IP address.

PSS is a network connecting a large number of commercial sites throughout the UK and also gives access to its international counterpart, IPSS.
The use of these latter two networks is charged at a commercial rate with a charge structure similar to that employed for the conventional telephone system.
The significant difference for the user between JANET and PSS is that all communication between JANET sites is funded by the Computer Board thus academic users incur no direct costs by its use.

BT offers PSS, Packet Switch Stream, as a national service, but its global services GNS have been amalgamated with MCI in the USA to form the international Concert service.
The X25 switches are usually built on a modular basis, using plug in printed circuit cards for expansion.
This style of switch, with the addition of a LAN gateway, offers the full range of services, allowing the user to choose or even to carry one protocol on top of another.

So, purely for novitiates, MUD is a large scale, and beautifully crafted, adventure game which runs on Essex University's DEC mainframes, and which is accessible over the phone via Packet Switch Stream (PSS).
But when MU and D combine to produce a Multi-User Dungeon, the result is an environment which, because of the strong human element and the richness of detail, lacks all of the built-in obsolescence which seems to blight any other computer game or adventure!
But co-author Richard Archwiz Bartle and publisher Simon Century Dally intend to make a MUD available as a commercial system for up to a hundred simultaneous users, and are currently looking for a VAX to run it on - watch this space for progress reports.
