Padania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the narrowest sense, Padania refers to the valley of the River Po (In Latin, Padus).
The term Padania was in use in Italy as a geographical definition for the area North of the Appenines, with Appenninia for the area in the South.
Padania is not an independent country, but the Northern League chose the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" from Verdi's Nabucco, Va' pensiero, as its national anthem.

Northern League (Italy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1996 the movement announced that its aim was the independence of Northern Italy under the name Padania, a name referring to the Po River valley, but which the Northern League gave a geographically broader usage that has been steadily gaining currency, at least among its followers.
The capital of Padania would be Mantua, and elections were organized by the party for a "northern parliament" (with no international recognition).
The renewed alliance with Berlusconi in 2001 forced the party to tone down, and Padania became the name of a proposed "macro-region", for which the League asks some degree of autonomy.

 Geografia d'Europa: material de suport
The endorsement by the LN of its discourse of `Padania' and its secession from the rest of Italy is clearly an attempt to forge a new political (as well as ethnic or cultural) identity for the supporters of the LN, as well as the people of the North of Italy (Agnew and Brusa, 1999).
With the creation of `Padania' the LN aims to construct a kind of `neo-ethnicity' for a `nation' which is made up of citizens who do not necessarily have a common history, culture or language but an identity derived from similar socio-economic values and attitudes.
However, the interesting thing to note is that the territorial boundaries of `Padania' are vaguely defined, which is part of a conscious strategy of the LN to keep the party's political opponents off-guard (Agnew and Brusa, 1999).
