The Paddington arm of the Grand Union Canal terminates at Paddington Basin (this canal links Manchester and London).
Paddington has several famous sons, notably Alexander Fleming — the scientist who discovered Penicillin (a plaque commemorating this is placed outside his laboratory at St Mary's Hospital on Praed Street) — and Alan Turing (mathematician; there is a plaque on the Hotel where he was born: The Colonnade in Warrington Crescent).
In Paddington Station there is a display case showing Paddington Bear, a character of children's fiction who, in the book, is first discovered at this station and hence named after it.

Paddington was much closer to the heart of the capital and was served by the "New Road" connecting it with the City.
The Paddington Arm opened on 10th July 1801, terminating in a 400 yard long basin, 30 yards wide, around which were wharves, a hay and straw market, sheds for warehousing, and pens for livestock.
The Paddington Arm was a success and Paddington was soon a busy inland transhipment point, with goods being carried on to other parts of London on carts.

In fact will Paddington keep its charm or will the less attractive parts be fenced out just like in the east end where Porches sit fenced in, in the car parks of luxury flats while beyond the barbed wire Lime House is still in the same state of disrepair it was 20 years ago?
Whatever you think or don't think about this development it's going to change the face of Paddington forever; Only in the next 5-10 years when everything thing is built and everyone is moved in will we truly see what that face this is going be.

At the time of writing (Oct 2002) a major development is in progress all round the basin, which is expected to bring life back to the area.
The basin will be surrounded by offices and flats, with new buildings for the hospital on the south side, and shops and restaurants at the far end.
The canopy of the covered wharf at the far end of the basin (centre background) has been dismantled and preserved, and will be incorporated into one of the new buildings in a different part of the site.

Little Venice is a triangular canal basin, a sort of watery roundabout with exits for Paddington, Limehouse and the West Midlands.

The building featured a large king post roof, in softwood, that was cantilevered in two directions forming a large swept canopy overhanging the canal.
McCurdy and Co. were appointed, in 1999, by the Chelsfield and Paddington Basin Development Company to dismantle, repair and conserve the canopy.

The redevelopment of Paddington Basin is a welcome boost for an area that has been criminally overlooked in the last couple of decades when the popular notion of regeneration was being bandied about London.
The infrastructure around the basin is due to be completed during 2004 and will include three new bridges, permanent towpaths and temporary boardwalks to allow pedestrian access to the complete perimeter of the basin.
The Point is the first major building completed under Farrell's 1996 Basin masterplan which, unfortunately, is currently lying dormant after communications giant Orange shied away from taking up occupancy themselves (they are however, under contract to sub-let the property themselves).
