A brig sloop had two (A vertical spar for supporting sails) masts and a ship sloop had three, because a (A penal institution (especially on board a ship)) brig in those days was a one or two masted vessel – to be a ship it had to have three or more masts.
A ship sloop was generally an equivalent of a (A highly maneuverable escort warship; smaller than a destroyer) corvette.

On Sunday morning, September 12, 1993 the L-36 sloop Eventide, single-handed by Bob Griffiths, was en-route to Santa Cruz Island from Marina Del Rey, California.
The kayaks soon appeared to be the underside of the hulls of a capsized Hobie Cat, with two waterlogged sailors, standing on the netting between the hulls.
They were clinging to the underside, dressed only in wet shorts and life jackets, one waving a paddle with an orange colored tee shirt covering the blade.

Since it has come to light that the Unicorn has always been as she is today (give or take the odd temporary signal mast) the Society now intends to keep her as she is, sheltering under the weatherproof roof that has preserved her so well.
