Paddy and his best friend Kevin are part of a neighborhood gang that sets fires in vacant buildings, routinely teases and abuses younger kids and plays in forbidden places.
As Paddy becomes aware that his parents' marriage is disintegrating, Doyle's control of his protagonist's voice remains unerring, and the gradual transition of Paddy's thoughts from the hurly-burly of play and pranks to a growing fear and misery about his father's alcoholic and abusive behavior is masterfully realized.
As Paddy grows up and starts to realize that there are real problems and issues out there that really do affect him and that he's got to come to terms with, the narration does an admirable job of maturing along with the boy.

Conformation that Paddy does not understand is sealed when he asks “ — Has she gone for 99s?” His father doesn’t reply, the silence filling the void between him and Ma — unbeknown to Paddy, whose innocent question remains unanswered.
Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha is written in the first person, and is therefore devoid of the authorial omniscience and intrusiveness that would allow Doyle to relate to the reader.

Paddy Clarke is ten years old, knows important things about mice, has a little brother he likes to call Sinbad and spends most of his time getting up to no good.
Paddy and his friends stage a Viking funeral for a dead rat, run the Grand National over the neighbors' hedged gardens, set fires at building sites, rob ladies' magazines (because they were the easiest) from shops, and torment each other, forming fluid alliances and watching for weaknesses.
Sinbad, Paddy's younger brother, is a tag-along nuisance, tolerated primarily as a victim for experimentation, such as forcing a capsule of lighter fluid between his teeth and lighting it.

Eye Weekly - BOOKS: Roddy Doyle -- Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha - 08.19.93
Narrated by the 10-year-old Paddy, it's a different sort of book than the novels of the Barrytown trilogy (so named for their setting in Barrytown, a working class suburb of Dublin).
For instance, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha cannot be described simply as a book full of Irish people yelling at each other (the book takes place in 1968, an era in which, according to Doyle, swearing wasn't popular).
The passage in which Paddy describes his favorite saint's story, that of Father Damien and the lepers, portrays the value of a child's imaginative powers without getting mushy about it all.

Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha reads like a whirlwind of youthful pep that may leave the unwary reeling dizzily in its wake.

Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha is essentially a sad book about unfulfilled hopes (ha ha ha is a refrain of derision, not merriment), but the framework is comic; it isn't, in the conventional sense, a "literary" novel, and as such it was an unusual winner for the Booker, in 1993.
It was therefore important to Doyle the writer that while his parents were happy in their youth, in telling their story they rarely, if ever, bemoaned the absence of the world in which they grew up.
In just 15 years he has evolved from a young whippersnapper rattling the cage of Irish literature to revered man of letters: not quite a father figure, but perhaps an establishment one.

There are many factors which suggest how Doyle has succeeded in creating a 'triangular relationship' between himself the reader and the narrator — Paddy Clarke — so that the reader has a greater awareness of the predicament that Paddy is in.
