Eye - BOOKS: Roddy Doyle -- Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha - 08.19.93   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Narrated by the 10-year-old Paddy, it's a different sort of book than the novels of the Barrytown trilogy (so named for their setting in Barrytown, a working class suburb of Dublin).
For instance, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha cannot be described simply as a book full of Irish people yelling at each other (the book takes place in 1968, an era in which, according to Doyle, swearing wasn't popular).
Eventually, Doyle does read a grimmer passage -- from the book's second half, when it has become clear that Ma and Pa Clarke aren't the happiest of folks and that the meanness of the planet is getting the better of Paddy.
