  Paean - LoveToKnow 1911
It is equally difficult to discover the relation between Paean or Paeon in the sense of " healer " and Paean in the sense of " song." Farnell refers to the ancient association between the healing craft and the singing of spells, and says that it is impossible to decide which is the original sense.
Its connexion with Apollo as the slayer of the python led to its association with battle and victory; hence it became the custom for a paean to be sung by an army on the march and before entering into battle, when a fleet left the harbour, and also after a victory had been won.
Paeans were sung at the festivals of Apollo (especially the Hyacinthia), at banquets, and later even at public funerals.

 Paean
Paean, in Homer, was the Greek physician of the gods.

About the 4th century the paean became merely a formula of adulation; its object was either to implore protection against disease and misfortune, or to offer thanks after such protection had been rendered.

Paean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Musically, the paean was a choral ode, and originally had an antiphonal character, in which a leader sang in a monodic style, with the chorus responding with a simple, informal phrase; however, later in its development, the paean was an entirely choral form.
Paeans meant to be sung on the battlefield were accompanied by aulos and kithara.
A particularly cogent Paean is that composed in the later twentieth century by the British composer, Kenneth Leighton, a work that is both triumphal and ascerbic and that poses questions to the listener that are both challenging and re-enforcing in the spiritual sense.

 On "Paean to Place"
Niedecker‘s use of sequences reaches its apex in "Wintergreen Ridge" and "Paean to Place." "Wintergreen Ridge" employs a three-line stanza and short lines with a margin at the left and two internal margins.
The lines move away from the left to the right, and in the hesitation between stopping and not stopping at the end of the lines focus sharp attention on individual lines, even while the movement of the poem is linear, back to the left, and forward to the next stanza.
In "Paean to Place," the style is not significantly different [from "Wintergreen Ridge"], though a five-line stanza (often quite richly rhymed) gives her and her reader more very welcome elbow room, and this seems to have enabled her to persist in suppressing punctuation, but without becoming cryptic.

AsiaMedia :: Is HERO a Paean to Authoritarianism?
Zhang Yimou's Hero has just been released in the United States again stimulating discussion of whether it is a paean to authoritarianism.
Ever since seeing Hero at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January of 2003, I have felt that not only is it not a paean to authoritarianism, it is a sharp rejection of it.
One should not accept at face value what the protagonists say in the film as representative of the intentions of the auteur (or for that matter, even Zhang Yimou's public utterances about Hero).
