Abstract: Belgian Journal of zoology 133 (2003): 95-102
The aim of this study was to determine the microhabitat use and the diet of Alpine newt paedomorphs, metamorphs and immatures (Triturus alpestris apuanus) coexisting in a small pond in Tuscany, central Italy, i.e.
In the studied pond, facultative paedomorphosis was previously shown to be favoured by a precocious maturity of the paedomorphs.
This study shows that the coexistence of paedomorphs and metamorphs may also be supported by some dietary and spatial segregation, although any advantages gained by this pattern are rather limited in the adult stage.

Abstract: Current Studies in Herpetology (1999): 89-94
Feeding habits and micro-habitat use were compared between metamorphs and paedomorphs in a population of the Alpine newt, Triturus a.
Whereas paedomorph diet was mainly composed of plankton, that of metamorphs was especially composed of larval and adult insects.
The spatial use of the habitat also differed between the two forms: the paedomorphs occupied all the micro-habitats (shore, bottom, water column and surface) while the metamorphs were only found along the shore and at the water surface.

Ambystoma ordinarium is a stream dwelling paedomorph endemic to high elevation habitats in central Mexico [36].
This species is particularly interesting from an ecological and evolutionary standpoint because it harbors a high level of intraspecific mitochondrial variation, and as an independently derived stream paedomorph, is unique among the typically pond-breeding tiger salamanders.

My thesis project is looking at how the presence of predators affect the expression of the paedomorphic phenotype in Ambystoma talpoideum, the mole salamander.
A paedomorphic salamander is one that becomes reproductively mature in the traditional larval body form.

MEEC 2006 - Talk Abstracts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
One larval characteristic retained by paedomorphs is an aquatic tail morphology, consisting of a higher, longer tail.
Because the tail is important in courtship and both morphs sometimes breed together in the same pond, the paedomorph tail morphology may put selective pressure on the tail morphology of metamorphs in ponds where the two morphs occur together.
This result is consistent with the hypothesis that the presence of paedomorphic males may select for increased tail height in metamorphic males, either via male-male competition or female choice.

Brad's point about German participation in the regime apparatus is a good one but for many Germans the whole "Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit" (coming to terms with the past) debate has subsided a little.
In the 50s there was the huge effort at economic reconstruction but politically Germany was retarded, and Grass' character Oscar in 'The Tin Drum' was a good characterization of this, a paedomorph who wouldn't develop beyond certain narrow limits.
Obviously the 60s reaction to political docility was severe, and violent, but from student protest to Red Army Faction atrocities just showed how unstable the process of rebuilding a proper public sphere was becoming.

 Introduction to A. mexicanum
In addition to the axolotl's application in the aforementioned areas of developmental biology, the animal has also served as a wonderful tool for exploring the role of metamorphosis in amphibians.
As a paedomorph, the axolotl offers excellent opportunities for understanding the role of larval characteristics in controlling or limiting the evolution of adult features (Hanken 1999).
