Paganism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Within a Christian context, Paganism (from Latin paganus) and Heathenry are a catch-all terms which has come to connote a broad set of spiritual/religious beliefs and practices of a natural religion, as opposed to the Abrahamic religions.
"Pagan" came to be equated with a popular, Christianized sense of "epicurean" to signify a person who is sensual, materialistic, self-indulgent, unconcerned with the future and uninterested in sophisticated religion.
In one well-established sense, paganism is the belief in any non-monotheistic religion, which would mean that the Pythagoreans of ancient Greece would not be considered pagan in that sense, since they were monotheist, but not in the Abrahamic tradition.

Paganism - Free Encyclopedia of Thelema
Paganism is a catch-all term which has come to bundle together (by extension from its original classical meaning of a non-Christian religion) a very broad set of not necessarily compatible religious beliefs and practices that are usually, but not necessarily, characterized by polytheism and, less commonly, animism.
Ancient paganism tended in many cases to be a deification of the political process, with "state divinities" assigned to various localities (Athena in Athens, for example).
Like the word pagan, it came to mean a person holding onto non-Christian customs and beliefs, often used in a pejorative sense of an unbaptized savage (as opposed to a heretic).

Pagan Activism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
One of the things that has become a strong central idea of paganism, wicca and witchcraft is that we all have an obligation to not turn away from the wrongs being committed in the world in order to protect that which cannot protect itself.
It is understood among the pagan community that to ignore an action is to condone it by default, therefore making it important to speak out when we see a wrong being committed, whether it be against the community, the earth, animals or other human beings.
These ideas have given birth to the concept of pagan activism which has grown in the last few years to the point where most pagan sites and groups are not complete without a charitable cause they support.
