PageMaker 7 - Adobe PageMaker 7 review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
PageMaker was the program that invented the whole concept of desktop publishing way back in 1985.
PageMaker has always recognised that by its nature any DTP application must lie at the heart of a larger workflow incorporating text and graphics from different sources.
PageMaker's templates and clip art are frankly dreadful while features such as its macro-based data merge look prehistoric compared to the latest Publisher's ODBC-compliant Mail Merge.

The logo is variation on the original logo from Aldus PageMaker and depicts Aldus Manutius, a student of Johannes Gutenberg and inventor of italics.
PageMaker and QuarkXPress were virtually equal, especially once PageMaker 5 added color seps, but momentum is hard to break, and QuarkXPress continued to gain market share, due largely to ignorance and mythology regarding PageMaker's capabilities.
PageMaker for the PC came out in 1986, but by then the Apple Mac was already established as the platform of choice for desktop publishing (DTP), with Quark XPress (1988) and Adobe Photoshop (1990) completing the suite of killer apps.

Thus, version 7.0 is a big deal for the maturing program, if for no other reason than it marks the first dramatic revision to PageMaker since the mid-1990s.
When users export a PageMaker document to PDF that is going to be seen in print, on the Web, or in eBook form, they only have to lay it out once rather than optimizing it for each place it will be seen.

 PageMaker scripting
PageMaker can be automated to the extent that you could find yourself sitting back and watching the screen as the program makes up the pages on its own.
PageMaker scripting is cross-platform, so basically, with a few small reservations, a script written on and for PageMaker under Windows will work just as well on a Mac.
However, PageMaker 6.5 added some things that scripting in earlier versions of PageMaker did not have: especially the ability to question the current state of the program (where things are and what they are), and then act on that information.
