The river bed is dry for many miles upstream and downstream from Pahranagat Valley, but there is water in the valley that comes from large, thermal springs along the flood plain.
Pahranagat, as with many other National Wildlife Refuges, is located on the Pacific Flyway which stretches from Alaska/Canada to Mexico.
Pahranagat's water originates from large springs to the north of the refuge and is managed to obtain the most value for wildlife.

Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, covers 5,380 acres along a ten-mile section of Pahranagat Valley.
The refuge includes a spring-fed riparian valley corridor with a series of broad, shallow lakes, brushy thickets, bulrush and cattail marshes, native grass meadows, and large cottonwood trees, all of which are surrounded by Mojave Desert scrub.
Historically, the White River flowed through the Pahranagat Valley, but now the riverbed generally is dry and water in the valley comes from large, thermal springs.

This study focuses on soil pendants found in five geomorphic surfaces in the northern Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, that range in age from Early Pleistocene to Recent (Q1-Q5) and vary in lithology from dolomite to volcanic tephras.
Key features observed in the Pahranagat Valley pendants provide evidence for precipitation at the clast-pendant contact suggesting that newer deposits may not always be found at the pendant terminus as other studies have suggested.
