The railway to Paignton was built by the Torbay and Dartmouth Railway, opening to passengers on 2 August 1859.
The Torbay and Dartmouth Railway was always operated by the South Devon Railway and was amalgamated with it on 1 January 1872.

Once past Dartmouth Castle there is a choice of paths - the coast path which sticks to a low level around the coast, or a bridleway which stays at a high level.
Parking is limited in Dartmouth though, so a park and ride scheme runs from the back of the town, which you might have to use in the summer.

All the stations (Paignton, Goodrington Sands, Churston and Kingswear) are large, but very functional and nothing much to see.
We started at Paignton and traveled 7 miles firstly uphill along the Torbay coast and then downhill into the Dart estuary.
Bought a combined ticket which let us travel by passenger ferry to Dartmouth, and then an hours boat trip up and down the river Dart.
