Four Fat Chicks -- Painkiller: Battle out of Hell Review
Painkiller was something of a surprise hit in 2004, drawing raves for its elegant, beautiful engine and brusque simplicity of gameplay.
Painkiller's Hell is a diorama of our species' capacity for self-destruction, an open-air museum in which every wicked deed, every cruelty, every occasion on which humans have displayed their ugliness is frozen in a drop of crystallized time.
Painkiller makes it clear that he's a doting husband, but despite this I always got a very sinister vibe from Daniel—as though he were a reformed hit man who quit the life after marriage but retains the capacity for unimaginable cruelty.

Painkiller's addictive single player game is quite intense, with more than 20 unique levels plus some simply breathtaking boss battles.
Painkiller's dark, brooding visuals are impressive, but the world also feels real, thanks to the developers' proprietary physics engine, called Havoc 2.0.
Painkiller successfully strips the genre back to it's roots in some aspects, but the high-gloss production values are sure to impress even jaded players.

 Painkiller - Ferrago
Painkiller's no-nonsense approach to the venerable genre of FPSery is evident from the outset, with little plot, narrative or scripted sequences added to create a sense of immersion or oneness.
Multiplayer Painkiller is an unashamedly uncomplicated beast, offering frenetic and near-constant combat through claustrophobic levels in a similar fashion to the Quake of old.
Painkiller looks fantastic: gorgeous, rich, diverse and atmospheric, and is actually pulled-off with sufficient aplomb to suggest an element of personality one wouldn't expect from such a title.

Four Fat Chicks -- Painkiller Review
Painkiller presents Purgatory in a very unique and compelling way: an unsettling, dreamlike landscape where your location, and the geography, seems to vary depending on your state of mind.
Painkiller is not about exploration, or locating an exit or a specific item, it's not about the stuff that normal FPS games are about.
Painkiller is the most fulfilling ultraviolent experience I've had on a computer in ages, and anyone looking for a good, straightforward shooter could do a lot worse.

Painkiller PC Video Game Review by AceGamez
Playing Painkiller requires you to be constantly on you feet and nowhere was the strafe key more important than it is here.
While many games have adopted rag doll and incorporated it into their game, Painkiller does it with a lot more style and is actually one of the reasons the action here remains interesting throughout despite the repetition.
Painkiller is an incredibly addictive and surprisingly fun FPS that concentrates more on mindless button bashing than in tactics, exploration or anything else than many modern shooters now live by.

PCF is keeping their lips sealed on the types of characters you will meet throughout the game, but there has been talk about a witch that will fly around on a broom chasing you until you gun the old hag down.
One thing is certain, "Painkiller" has the graphics to insure you have one of the most immersive gaming experiences to date.
While "Painkiller's" game engine looked fantastic, the frame rates could hurt the game, especially considering the that the game has multiple creatures onscreen at the same time in single player, and multiplayer is going to be complete chaos with enemies coming from all positions.

Painkiller takes immense glee in dispersing with any sense of political correction and serves up a tantalising orgy of violence, huge expansive levels and gigantic bosses.
Therefore Painkiller was already a game that had pleased us simply because of the two fingers it sticks up to all the pompous Daily Mail readers.
This aside however and Painkiller is more than good enough to recommend to those of you who have completed Far Cry and now have the long wait for Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.

Painkiller Review for PC - Gamer-Talk.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Like Serious Sam before it, Painkiller is an FPS that is purposefully designed with the old-school in mind, focusing squarely on killing a plethora of enemies that attack players in waves.
As captivating as its premise may be, Painkiller simply isn’t interested in telling a sweeping tale; the focus of the game is strictly on the extremely intense action.
Painkiller offers a multiplayer component in addition to the single-player missions, but this too is entirely rooted in the old-fashioned style of games like the original Quake, often to its detriment.

 Painkiller - ESCMag Review
Painkiller is a literal blast, a throwback to the days of straightforward shooters where the only goal was to survive long enough to get to the next level.
Really, that's the entire goal for each level: You'll enter an area and be “locked in” until killing a certain number of enemies, at which point doors open to the next area, where you'll be "locked in"...
Shooters usually reserve slot 1 for a knife or fists useless after the first level; the Painkiller is a nice melee weapon but also a very useful infinite-ammo ranged weapon.

Painkiller has an almost Diablo-like story and atmosphere in a first person environment with frantic, bloody action in the vein of Serious Sam.
Finally, there is the Painkiller itself, a strange melee weapon that has a chainsaw-style constant attack, but can be also fired out to create a beam between you and whatever wall you stick it to.
Ammo is plentiful, and while this level only included the shotgun and Painkiller to use, presumably we'll have access to a bigger arsenal when this level goes into the full game.

The very basic weapon in Painkiller is a staff that is capable of spitting out a projectile at an enemy and can cause different types of effects depending on how strong the monster is. One of the most interesting parts of the weapon is that, when launched, it can send your enemies flying toward you.
One of Painkiller's features, that will allow players to google over the physics even more, is the availability of the previously mentioned, slow-mo. Simply prepare to fire and as you fire activate the time limited slow-mo effect.

 DailyGame Review: Painkiller [Win]
Painkiller came from out of nowhere at E3 2003 to blow more than a few PC shooter fans’ minds.
In fact, as much as Painkiller sneaks up on you, pounces from the dark and tears into your gaming psyche with all the subtly of a 200-foot-tall necromancer, there’s just one thing keeping the game from becoming a true classic: a sense of purpose.
There are five basic levels in Painkiller, each divided into "chapters." While most first-person shooters today would at least have a common theme to each level, the chapters that comprise each level in Painkiller are as disparate as the enemies within them, leaving the game feeling almost like a tech demo.

Painkiller has its own theology – a vaguely Christian vision, tweaked just enough to be the perfect setting for shoot-‘em-up action.
Painkiller provides the sort of gameplay that usually seems old and tired to a modern audience, recalling as it does the early days of first-person shooters – but somehow the pure simplicity of the carnage, the quality graphics, the variety of enemies and the detailed physics combine for an incredible experience.
The Painkiller weapon’s laser-harpoon-like function lets you whip enemies over your head from high ledges, and blasting a rocket at the feet of a horde of skeletons in gas masks sends them flying outwards, limbs flailing.

Puzzles are typically nothing more complex than killing everything in sight, and levels usually funnel you from one encounter to the next with barely enough time to reload.

Even though both Painkiller and Far Cry belong to the same genre, they couldn't be further apart when it comes to the type of gameplay experience they offer.
For what it is intended to be, Painkiller filled the bill for me. I don't mind a mindless shooter here and there, especially when it's as well-done as this one.
The best thing about them though is that some of them are quite unique, like the swamp monster that is originally in liquid form (which means bullets and projectiles pass right through it), but if you light enough of the gaseous swamp on fire it can solidify, so that you can shoot at it.
