In the mid-1800's US Army mappers and surveyors came into this area and carried back East stories of the remarkable "Painted Desert and its trees turned to stone." Next, farmers, ranchers, and sightseers made their ways into the area.
Petroglyphs were made by pecking away the dark surface (desert varnish) of the rock to reveal the lighter underlying rock, generally sandstone.
Petroglyphs were pecked on exposed surfaces of boulders covered with "desert varnish." Desert varnish is a thin coating of iron or manganese, bacteria and other organic deposits, which slowly builds up on the rock surface, growing darker and harder with time.
