Painterly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Painterly is a literal translation of German Mälerisch, hence malerisch, one of the opposed categories popularized by the art historian Heinrich Wolfflin (1864 - 1945) in order to help focus, enrich and standardize the terms being used by art historians of his time to characterize works of art.
An oil painting is "painterly" when it is obvious that it has been painted with oil paints: when there are visible brush strokes, and a rough impasto surface.
"Painterly" art makes strong coloristic use of the many visual effects produced by paint on canvas such as chromatic progression, warm and cool tones, complementary and contrasting colors, broken tones, broad brushstrokes, impressionism, impasto and also of the artist's experience in painting.

The painterly effect a lesson by Virgil Elliott
This brings me to the ‘painterly effect’ or the process of having your brush strokes or knife effects appear on the canvas as you see opposite in the detail from a pink rose I painted 'wet-in-wet' before the blooms could wilt.
The "painterly" approach was originally an incidental effect most common in sketches and studies, the sole purpose of which was to help the artist solve some of the problems in the execution of a more refined painting.
Titian and Rembrandt became more "painterly" in their later years, when deteriorating eyesight may have hidden the irregularities from them (one hypothesis).

Many experimental animators create wonderful short painterly animations with traditional media; however, these animations require the skills of a master and years of effort.
Digital painterly animation promises to allow animators to create feature length animation in traditional animation styles.

The poem does succeed in suggesting that contemporary poems-about-paintings, or rather poems doing a painterly depicting, must retain some signs that a scene of such depth is reproduced only as it had once been applied to a flat surface.
Paintings and poems, and especially painterly poems, would not be "specimens," Stevens would contend, even at the cost of remaining on the outside of aesthetic clubs that would gladly have him as a member.
To h im, one was either a creator of abstractions or a publicizer of abstraction as (admittedly) an arousing idea; but the latter meant promoting it with metaphors that sensationalize it, extolling purity when "impure" was its impressive aspect, nullifying vit al power and making the fertile dry.

A method for rendering animation in a painterly style, which was first presented in [Meier, B. J.: Painterly Rendering for Animation.
The painterly renderer is then implemented in this environment, supported by a graphical user interface to allow easy experimentation with the parameters.
Although not all aspects of the painterly algorithm described by Barbara J. Meier were included, the rendered images provide an idea of what is possible using this technique.

We observe that the vast majority of image-based NPR techniques operate on a local pixel neighbourhood basis, typically as non-linear image filters seeking to conserve high-frequency information in the rendering.
Differential rendering styles are also possible by varying stroke style according to the classification of salient artifacts encountered, for example edges or ridges.
We demonstrate the results of our painterly technique on a wide range of images illustrating the benefits of rendering preferentially with regard to salience, and the improvements gained by subsequent relaxation of the painting using our GA technique.

First, the painterly styles that are best suited to representing information in a multidimensional dataset will be identified.
