He is currently the editor-in-chief and Publisher of the Press Holdings group of newspapers, owner of The Scotsman, for which he writes.
Neil was educated at Paisley Grammar School and Glasgow University.
The photograph is apparently of a woman Neil was briefly involved with while in the United States in the early 'nineties.

Schools should be institutions run by the enthusiasm of those who work there, those whose children go there and the local community in general.

The public transportation in Paisley at that time was by trolley car and Mother found a job as a conductress on the trolley.
Most of the gang attended Craigielea grade school where we often made plans for future walks, etc. Sometimes on the way home from school we'd pass the backside of Woodside Cemetery which was enclosed by a high stone wall, a challenge to our agility.
Anyway, I was on my way back to school with James and some others when somebody threw a cream cookie or cream puff and hit me on the back of the head with it, smearing cream all over my school cap.

Schools which take this road will be those that are confident of their survival--perhaps falsely confident.
The Secretary of State is to pay the schools, negotiate per capita funding, talk through their financial situation and satisfy their needs, but it is the local education authority that will have to pay because the money will come directly from its budget.
When school boards were introduced last year, we saw in many areas of Scotland--this is one of the reasons why I supported them--the first major involvement of parents in schools.

In a local referendum, held in 1995 ahead of the planned abolition of the Strathclyde Region and the partition of Renfrewshire into three separate local governments, the residents of Ralston voted overwhelmingly against leaving the new Paisley-based (and Labour-dominated) Renfrewshire authority to become an annex of the newly-partitioned (and Conservative-run) East Renfrewshire.
The Ralston Primary School uniform includes a scarlet tie in honour of a visit by Queen Elizabeth (the former Queen Mother) in the 1940s, it being her favourite colour.

It is also interesting to note that Stow was unwilling to permit his students to attend "even one class at the University", as it "divided their attention so as to retard their acquisition of the method of communication and moral training which were, and still are, the primary objects of the institution".
Stow's influence on the elementary schools of Scotland was considerable in drawing attention to the inspirational value of the human voice in teaching, and the value of the inter-communication between teacher and taught as opposed to the passive acquisition of knowledge from the printed page.

The New Community School will be established for the Ferguslie and Shortroods communities and, as well as providing a joined-up approach for the pupils' education and welfare, will be particularly geared towards helping children make a successful transition from primary to secondary schools.
The size of a school is significant in educational terms because a small size limits the number of subjects which can be taught at different stages.

School bullying victims' lives are at risk in Northern Ireland unless the government orders a public inquiry into the growing scandal, it was claimed today by the Democratic Unionist leader, Ian Paisley.
Aaron Armstrong, a first-year pupil at Cambridge House grammar school in Ballymena, was found hanging in a barn at his family's farm in Broughshane following months of torment.
Mr Paisley, who has been in contact with the Armstrong family, claimed other youngsters on school bus runs from rural regions were exposed.

The new railway system, operating between Renfrew and Paisley, was opened in 1873, with a large procession complete with bunting and flags.
A former student of Paisley Grammar School who used this horse drawn train wrote in 1860 that he was allowed to drive the horse or collect the fares.
The postal service was organised in such a way that all mail went through the main Paisley Post Office and was delivered from there, and vice versa, to a small Post Office in Renfrew High Street by one man. Renfrew people collected their mail from this Post Office.

The Forest of Paisley, a large tract of wild land to the south west of Paisley, was used by the Stewards as a private hunting preserve, using as a base their 'hunting lodge' at Blackhall, perhaps dating back as early as the 1140's.
The Semples were a tenacious family, and the only piece of 16th century heraldry in the town of Paisley is a stone showing the Semple arms, dated 1580, with initials A S for Andrew Semple who married in 1565 Margaret Stirling of Craigbarnet.
Within Paisley Abbey is a monument known as the 'tomb of Marjorie Bruce'.

Oskar Kaemmer School in Magdeburg, Germany had a company launch attended by officials from the Ministry of Education, British Embassy with coverage of the event by local TV, radio and newspapers.
They are working with their partners in Paisley Grammar School, Scotland to import tea, coffee and crisps and export toiletries, chocolate and Didl (the cartoon mouse) products.
Several schools are taking part in the annual Berlin Entrepreneurs Fair in May. This year a section of the fair will be for school companies.

William Docherty from Paisley Grammar School, won the Eric Liddell Memorial Award for the most outstanding performance at the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships at Grangemouth last weekend.
Ross Toole from Gryffe High School was another winner, taking the under 15 boys 1500m by a distance, in 4 22.8, which confirms him as the fastest in Scotland so far this year.
Colin May from Gleniffer High School ran well for second in the over 17s 2000m steeplechase, in 6.48 and fellow pupil Kathleen Bryce, who had won the County Schools 200m and 800m earlier in the week, won bronze in the under 15s 800m in 2 25.16, which was a personal best.

The infant school was then remodelled and equipment supplied to bring the school up to the standards required of the day to provide education as an "Intermediate " Higher Grade school which provided education for secondary pupils to the end of the third year only.
Those pupils of the John Neilson Institution who wished to continue their day school education beyond that stage then proceeded to other schools in the area and there were not a few citizens of Paisley who as a result were former pupils of both the John Neilson Institution and of Paisley Grammar School.
In 1918 the school was transferred to the newly created Renfrewshire Education Authority and, at this time, those responsible for its well-being expressed considerable fears for the continuance of the tradition, ideals and independence of the school.

Old Grammarians CC was formed in 1939 by a number of former pupils of Paisley Grammar School, led by Hector Munro, who was later to captain Ferguslie 1st XI.
But only one season was possible at their school ground at Penilee before the outbreak of World War Two.
In 1970, the club moved from Penilee to Allanton playing fields in the Ralston area of Paisley, whereupon a massive recruiting drive resulted in the formation of a youth section which was to prove of tremendous long-term benefit.

A health alert has hit one of Scotland's oldest schools after a boy was diagnosed with suspected meningitis.
Education managers yesterday sent letters to the parents of all 1,100 children who attend Paisley Grammar School after the unnamed male pupil showed symptoms of the potentially lethal disease.
The authorities have ruled out a mass vaccination of students at the school at this stage, but the letters advised parents to seek urgent medical help if pupils showed any tell-tale symptoms of the infection, such as headaches or flu-like illness.
