Paisley (design) - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Paisley or Paisley pattern is a droplet-shaped vegetal motif, similar to half of the Yin yang symbol, the Indian bodhi tree leaf, or the mango tree.
From roughly 1800 to 1850, using Jacquard looms, the weavers of the town of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, adapted the design and wove woollen shawls, hence the design is popularly known as the Paisley pattern.
Paisley became popular again in the late 1980s/early 1990s particularly with African-American gangs, the Bloods and the Crips, when, respectively, red or blue paisley bandanas were worn as a signifier of gang affliation.

While the swirling arabesque pattern was certainly not invented here it is almost universally known for the town which gave rise to its popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries - Paisley, Scotland.
Located about 11 miles from Glasgow and home to a magnificent 12th century abbey, Paisley became the epicentre (more shawls were produced here than in any other location) for weaving shawls and, as a result, "Paisley" became the generic term for the pattern.
The shawls were oversized squares as well as rectangular in shape with later shawls measuring four metres in length and two metres in width and usually made from blends of silk, wool and cotton.
