The Pakenham railway line in Melbourne, Australia is the suburban electrified portion of the railway to Bairnsdale in eastern Gippsland.
The Pakenham line began as part of the main line to Gippsland, but at the time the route through the suburbs has not been determined, so the first portion to open was the section between Oakleigh and Bunyip (Gippsland) in October 1877.
In 1954 the line beyond Dandenong was electrified mainly because of the expected briquette traffic from the brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, and over the next two years most of the line between Dandenong and Pakenham was duplicated and provided with power signalling, although Narre Warren to Berwick was not done until 1962.

Pakenham was proclaimed a town in 1861 and it was formed as a riding of Berwick shire in 1868.
Pakenham became the headquarters of the shire in 1901 and a shire hall was eventually built in 1912.
The Pig and Whistle Hotel was established and the railway arrived in 1877, facilitating the expansion of the timber industry with tramways connecting the main line at Garfield to the sawmills and loggers' camps in the Black Snake Ranges to the north.

Although it is now operated as a branch from the main Werribee/Geelong line at Newport, the line was originally built from the city, with the Geelong line being the branch.
The line officially opened in January 1859, but the section between the vicinity of the Newport workshops and Williamstown Pier was in use by Geelong-line trains from October 1857 (see the history of the Werribee line for more information).

The Gippsland Railway was through by the early 1880s and spawned a whole new community of railway workers down near the line.

Gippsland is the region comprising the lowlands of south-eastern Victoria, stretching from the edges of Melbourne to the southern extremity of the border with New South Wales.
Besides a hurried walk to Newmarket Railway Station to catch said train, nothing uneventful happened, and within a quarter of an hour I was departing the train at Flinders Street.

This cache is located near the Pakenham Railway station, which is the end of the suburban electric rail network.
The train line was electrified through to the Latrobe Valley mainly to haul coal to Melbourne but the growth of natural gas removed the need for the coal trains so the electric network was removed beyond Pakenham.

The Walhalla Goldfields Railway is operated by a dedicated band of volunteer train enthusiasts, who in the course of the last 10 years have rebuilt this historic line, once fêted as the most scenic railway route in Australia, all the way up the picturesque Stringer's Gorge, from the Thomson River to Walhalla.
When the line was reopened, in March, 2002, Tim Fisher, a fellow steam buff, disclosed that their stretch target is now to reopen the line as far back as Erica by 2010.
