The Coast Guard is responsible for the policing of over 2.01 million square kilometres of ocean and the area under its control includes nearly 1,200 islands and a coastline of 7517 kilometres.
This coast guard was modelled on the lines of the British (HMCG) and American (USCG) coast guards.

Stating that the idea of a hotline had been first mooted by the CG and that it was also included in former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee's nine point programme for strengthening ties between New Delhi and Islamabad, he said, adding that great strides had been made towards establishing hotline since then.
