Quetta is the capital of the province Balochistan in Pakistan.
On 1 March 2005, a PIA Boeing 777 landed at Manchester International Airport, United Kingdom with 12 crew and 323 passengers on board, and was attended by the fire services to check a reported undercarriage fire as it was approaching its stand.

Pakistan was to host the games earlier this year, and had already begun the torch relay, when the games had to be cancelled with the beginning of the Iraq war.
Pakistan was then scheduled for the 2001 games (when they were due to host the 1999 games), but the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, war in Afghanistan (2002) and war in Iraq (2003) has meant the 9th edition of the games have not been held.
Pakistan had had so much trouble with defections of athletes in recent years that prior to the Commonwealth Games they had every athletes and family sign a pledge stating that the athletes would return or the family would pay 1 million rupees, or $16,500 US to the government.
