  Restructuring the Railways
This decision seemingly marked a reversal in the process of privatisation of Pakistan Railways which was initiated by the previous government back in 1998 when on August 30, the 137-year old Pakistan Railways was divided into three separate and independent units, each to be headed by a Managing Director.
It may be recalled that Pakistan Railways has been invariably reporting losses in its operations during the last 52 years despite repeated efforts on the part of the various governments in the past to inject dynamism, both administratively and financially, in its working, but all such efforts seemingly failed to produce the desired results.
The turnaround in the railways is imperative as this organization should serve as the pivot of the national transport system and an arterial channel of economic activity in the country.

Pakistan Railways had received these locomotives from China last year under, but nine out of total locomotives purchased so far had to be withdrawn due to serious damages appearing in their underframes, he told National Assembly in response to a Calling Attention Notice.
To a question, the Minister told the House that Pakistan Railways was moving according to the contract agreement and has also asked the Chinese firm to come to Pakistan and inspect their product as well as ensure a warrantee for five more years for these locomotives.
To a query, the minister said, a team of experts from Chinese firm is reaching Pakistan on March 16 to discuss this matter with Pakistan Railways.

 Pakistani team leaves for Delhi to finalize train service - Irna
A nine-member delegation of Pakistan Railways left for New Delhi on Wednesday to finalize the arrangements to launch a new train service between the two countries, officials said.
The line between Khokhrapar in Pakistan's Sindh province and Munabao in India's western Rajasthan state was severed in 1965 because of a war between the two countries.
He said the railway service is expected to commence in the last week of this month, but final date and schedule would be announced after the meeting with Indian authorities.

Railway is a very efficient way of mass transit and thankfully India realised it very early and has one of the most formidable system.
Pakistan is a lot smaller country then India and railways come into their own over long distances and moving mass numbers.
Infact Indian railways is the mode of transportation for a commoners and someone trying to move faster there are airlinks which gives better and comfortable journey, though i should say that airlinks are not that developed and cheap than other developed countries.

 Railways may be privatized partially -DAWN - Business; 09 January, 2004
The study has been submitted to the Ministry of Privatization and the Pakistan Railways recently by Mr SA Syed, who also individually met some of the senior officials of the ministry of finance and the railways officials in the provinces.
The study has recommended that the government should retain 20 per cent of shares in the Railways in the shape of land and infrastructure, 50 per cent of the shares be offered in open market and the rest 30 per cent be sold to strategic buyers.
The study pointed out that Pakistan Railways has been suffering constant losses for the last few decades and short term solutions to place it back on track could not solve the problem.
