Interview with Quatrina Hosain Currim of Pakistan Television
I had an opportunity to talk about the economic reforms that are going on here, about the possibilities for foreign direct investment in Pakistan, about the educational reforms that are going on here, and of course about the important work that we have still to do in fighting terrorism.
CURRIM: And, of course, Pakistan and the United States, as you mentioned, have had this wonderful relationship and especially going with the war on terrorism, but the average Pakistani has this fear that when the United States loses interest, it walks away.
SECRETARY RICE: I would say to the people of Pakistan that the United States will be a friend for life, that we understand that at one time in our history we did not maintain and continue a deep relationship with Pakistan after having shared strategic interests during the Cold War.

Pakistan's economy, once thought to be highly vulnerable to external and internal shocks, was unexpectedly resilient in the face of adverse events such as the Asian financial crisis, global recession, drought, the post-9/11 military action in Afghanistan, and military tensions with India.

Television was launched in Pakistan in 1964 as a state-controlled enterprise, the immediate motive being to establish a direct channel of mass communication for President Ayub who was due to stand for re-election.
Pakistan has had three wars with India but each time the conflict was of short duration and one is not aware of any propaganda planning effort of the kind the Allies and the Axis powers made during the Second World War or even the strategies devised during the conflicts in Korea, Algeria and Vietnam.
Pakistan television apparently does not realise that in the past the people could find some support for its enemy images from their own experience, the new generation does not have this back-up facility.
