Music of Pakistan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ghazal and qawwali music can to some extent be considered forms of Hindustani classical music in that they make use all of its main features ( raag, taal, etc), styles, and many of the musical instruments associated with it ( sitar, tabla, harmonium, etc).
Many Pakistani musicians of other genre (particularly ghazal, qawwali and folk musicians) therefore are nonetheless trained in Subcontinent classical, and often belong to a gharana.
Qawwali is similar to Subcontinent 's musical genres ; it has three components: a rhythm (traditionally played on the dholak), the melodic line of the vocals, and the pitch of the melody which is reinforced on harmonium.

 Ari Gold Films: Qawwali Music
This essay analyzes Qawwali music and its roots in Persian poetry, in the context of shamanism studies.
He writes of the 1975 event, "members of the largely Pakistani audience would run down the aisles, hurling money at the musicians and banging their heads against the stage until they were bloody and unconscious" (Rockwell 1989).
Qawwali music has been bastardized and secularized in India and Pakistan (Begg 35) not just because the music is so infectious, but because the lyrics, if listened to "straight," sound like a call to drink and make love.

pakistani pop is a developing thing which has suffered due to a lack of public and societal support (which may seem a bit counter to my last post) in a country too meager to really focus as fully on the arts as it should have.
Today of course, the indian pop music industry has become just a sub-category of the film industry, while pakistani pop-music is more centered around bands playing 80s-style rock, or newer permutations, like the heavier proto-junoon rock bands and various folk-music-origin-related (bhangra, sindhi, farsi/pashto) singers.

This is a brief note on the evolution of ghazal from a poetic form into a genre of light classical music.
However, unlike classical music which to this day is perceived as elitist, ghazals have become popular with the common man. The magical combination of beautiful lyrics and dulcet voices have enabled ghazals and ghazal singers to leave an indelible mark on the hearts and souls of ghazal listeners everywhere.
