Capitalizing on its location at the confluence of the Xe Don and the Mekong rivers, roughly halfway between the Thai border and the fertile Bolaven Plateau, PAKXE is the far south's biggest city, and its commercial and transport hub.
For the traveller, however, it is little more than a dull stopover en route to Laos's southernmost tip or via the Thai-Lao border at Chong Mek, though it makes a more comfortable base than Champasak for visits to the Khmer ruins at Wat Phou.

However, the attention to us is never overwhelming and no longer do we sit on railway station platforms (Laos doesn't have a railway system but this is just an example) with a small crowd gathered around us as we read.

We had to cross the Mekong to reach Champasak a crossing undertaken by what is best described as a pontoon - at least I think that is the word - planks of wood place length ways from port to starboard (or vice versa) across three boats.
