Despite its remarkable survival through the Depression, the Palace suffered from a serious loss of revenue which hampered August Williams' ability during the late 1930s to replace the old familiar rides with newer thrills; obviously, something had to change soon if the Palace was to operate beyond its 50th season.
This property connected the existing Palace to Cookman Avenue, and ran parallel to a pedestrian walkway that for years had served as the Cookman Avenue entry to the Palace and an exit for patrons of the Lyric Theatre.
In the first Palace expansion since 1903, Lange and Resnick installed 3,000-square feet of arcade games, but after several seasons, while Lange was serving in the U.S. Army, Resnick replaced the arcade with a Donkey Ride, one of the strangest attractions ever at the Palace.

It was famous for having one of America's greatest hand-carved carousels, for its Ferris wheel that carried passengers for more years than any other in history, and for inspiring a generation of artists, photographers and songwriters (including Bruce Springsteen).
Thanks to its iconic wall murals, including a grinning fun face knowing as Tillie, the Palace was one of the most identifiable building on the Jersey Shore.

Coming back from lunch we decided to walk by the Palace Amusements building; I was always fascinated with the place because of the hordes of people it must have attracted when Asbury Park was in its glory.
The thrill of being in the Palace Amusements building was a dream come true for me. The building itself is a testament to life.

Demolition of the Palace in 2004 came over the objections of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Asbury Park Historical Society, Preservation New Jersey, and Save Tillie.
In the end, we saved more than 125 internal artifacts from the Palace and the Tillie mural from the Cookman Avenue wall, and through our work the Bumper Car murels on the Lake Avenue facade were also removed to storage.

For those of you who don't know, the original portion of Palace Amusements was built in 1888, and a major expansion was completed in 1955.
A group called Save Tillie, where the photo at left came from, has been involved in efforts to save the Palace Amusements building, or at least to save the Tillie images from the side of the building.
He'd always known Tillie at Palace Amusements, as well as the nearby Casino, Convention Hall, Howard Johnson's, the Stone Pony, etc. The Palace is also of value to Bruce Springsteen fans, as the Palace has been mentioned in a Springsteen song, plus one album cover photo was actually taken in front of a neon-lit Tillie.

My first "real" job was at the Palace Amusements as it was for hundreds, maybe thousands of teenagers and young adults.
Walking up to the Palace one could quickly see that demolition would be swift and painful but among the pile of rubble the Funhouse still remained standing.

Over the years I would stop in Asbury just to look at the Palace the last time you could go near the building I peeked inside although the building was empty you could still see the outline where the collection bin for the rings from the carrousel was.
I worked at the Palace for the summer of 1979, on an extended working vacation after my last year as a student.

The one thing that made Palace Amusements so memorable for myself though, and many others I suspect, was the somewhat deranged looking grin of the two huge faces which gazed down from the Palace walls with an almost demonic glee.
Recently The Asbury Park Press published an article stating that Palace Amusements, the 110-year-old landmark, was in imminent danger of collapsing and would be demolished shortly.
Over at Palace Amusements, the entire block and bordering streets around the condemned structure were cordoned off with yellow police tape and orange plastic barrels.
