Will Oldham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His music is often placed (perhaps inappropriately) under the genre of "alternative country".
In addition to his own projects, Oldham often plays and records with other musicians, including David Pajo and his brothers Ned and Paul Oldham, but is generally the chief creator of the music.
He has also been involved in musical projects and bands such as Box of Chocolates, Amalgamated Sons of Rest, The Anomoanon, The Boxhead Ensemble, Superwolf (with Matt Sweeney), Continental OP (with David Pajo), Current 93 and The Silver Jews (with David Berman).

Palace Music: Viva Last Blues (1995) -- Switching to Palace Music (again, the arrangements are fuller), this is the most listenable Oldham release yet and a good starting point for anyone wanting to get into his music.
Palace Music: Arise, Therefore (1996) -- Originally released as a Palace Music recording, this is now credited to "Will Oldham." (Somewhere, somehow all these changes--even this retroactive change--make sense if you're into subtleties.) This record isn't as good as previous releases, due in part to the use of a Maya Tone drum machine throughout.
Palace Music: Lost Blues and Other Songs (1997) -- A collection of Palace 7" records, these sorts of compilations are hit-and-miss by their nature, but this one is mostly hit.

John Fogerty wasn't really born on the bayou, Bob Dylan's given surname was Zimmerman, and, yes, Will "Palace" Oldham was raised in the relatively urbane Kentucky town of Louisville, not the rugged hills of Appalachia.
But over the course of four CDs, numerous name variations (Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, Palace Music, and just plain Palace), several EPs, and a bunch of singles, Oldham has appropriated the sound and feel of back-porch blues and Depression-era country better than most.

The four-song An Arrow Through the Bitch compiles a pair of classic early Palace singles, both of them critical stepping stones from the neo-old-timey primitivism of efforts like There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You to the more full-bodied, richly contoured, mutant country-rock of Will Oldham's later work.
Notably more defined and robust than previous Palace outings, the "Come In"/"Trudy Dies" single captures the polarizing emotional extremes of Oldham's singular vision, juxtaposing fragile, poignant sincerity against punishing, overripe morbidity.

In complete contrast to his recent score for Bowfinger, David Newman's music for Brokedown Palace is a sensitive, intensely emotional and, at times, sentimentally beautiful work.

It is a very important element in Brokedown Palace, because it gives the score the emotional sincerity needed in the mix of different stylistics.

Sings Greatest Palace Music takes some of his Palace phase's highlights and wraps them in slick, session-pro Nashville backing -- surely an idea that'll send some diehard fans running, hands clapped over their bleeding ears, to their tattered copies of There Is No One What Will Take Care of You.

With Sings Greatest Palace Music, though, he really forces you to address just what you're trying to get out of his music, and the assumptions that you bring to a Bonnie "Prince" Billy record.

There's no escaping Oldham's darker viewpoint and Greatest Palace Music is unavoidably a deeply schizophrenic album.

The most un-Will Oldham-like of Oldham's releases, SINGS GREATEST PALACE MUSIC finds the singer/songwriter returning to the material he wrote in the 1990s under the monikers Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and Palace Music.
Oldham sings in the voice he developed recording under the name Bonny "Prince" Billy--an understated, clear tenor, which bears little resemblance to the ragged, throaty vocals he employed with Palace.
