Whilst it was closed the old Shaftesbury Theatre, across the Avenue on the site presently occupied by the Soho Fire Station, was completely demolished during a bombing raid, The Palace sustaining some blast damage.

The Palace Theatre is a challenging space for large productions to work and operate within, and a large element of the rigging detail concentrated on maximising every spare cubic centimetre of airspace for storage.
The ends of the truss were secured directly to the walls of the theatre via chemical fixings.
The Palace Theatre had no over-stage flying points suitable for a set of this size and shape, so one of the early jobs was removal of the house flying bars to make space for the production rigging.

Based on the hugely popular Victorian thriller by Wilkie Collins dating from 1860, the musical is appropriately housed in the gothic Palace Theatre, previous home of Les Miserables.
The novel has been intelligently adapted by Charlotte Jones, with the inventive lyrics supplied by David Zippel (which work to best effect in 'You Can Get Away With Anything.') Director Trevor Nunn skilfully creates an atmospheric evocation of both the period and Collins' ghost story.

The Jim Steinman(lyrics)/Lloyd Webber musical received its London premiere in 1998 at the Aldwych Theatre, where it ran for two-and-a-half years.

Sitting in the audience of Spamalot was like arriving late at a party when the alcohol has been flowing for a while yet you're stone cold sober.
The Song That Goes Like This, sung by Hannah Waddington's statuesque Lady of the Lake is an entertaining stab at stage balladeering and her second-half dressing room lament at her character's lack of anything to do, is also pretty funny.
If you want to see something that gently plays with the conventions of musical theatre, Avenue Q or for that matter even The Producers would be a much better bet.
