RPGnet: Review of Paladin of Souls   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The sequel, Paladin of Souls is set roughly 3 years after the events of Curse of Chalion, but it does not have the same protagonist.
This means that Paladin of Souls does relatively stand alone, a pleasure given so many sequels and series in the SF&F field where this is not true.
Lady Ista, recovering from the loss of many of her family and freed from the terrible god-induced visions (the events of the previous book) has no desire to be trapped in the life of a royal widow, retired to a remote castle and living on the sufferance of her kin.

Review: Paladin of Souls is the sequel to The Curse of Chalion and follows a minor character from that book.
Ista, the main character, is in her 40s and I found her perspective a nice change of pace from the younger women books tend to focus on.

 Allscifi.com Book Review
Paladin of Souls picks up three years after The Curse of Chalion, when the dreadful curse that plagued Chalion's rulers was lifted.
Although Paladin of Souls is a sequel to The Curse of Chalion, it is not a traditional sequel in that the stars of The Curse of Chalion are mentioned only briefly here and the peripheral characters are given a chance to shine.
Although I still rated it at 5 stars, The Paladin of Souls is not as good as The Curse of Chalion, but Bujold is such a wonderful author that I loved this book anyway.

Lois McMaster Bujold:  Paladin of Souls
Paladin of Souls is Lois McMaster Bujold’s follow-up to her highly successful 2001 fantasy The Curse of Chalion.
While The Curse of Chalion followed Castillar Lupe dy Cazaril and the royasse Iselle, Paladin of Souls is the story of Iselle’s mother, the dowager royina Ista dy Baocia.
While there is some of Bujold's trademark humor in Paladin of Souls, it is much more understated that frequently is the case, making Paladin of Souls a more serious novel than many of the Vorkosigan books of The Curse of Chalion.

Paladin of Souls is the second book in Bujold's series involving the country of Chalion.

She is given the tasks of rescuing souls being destroyed by demons and sorting out a deadly triangle of demon magic and deception.

Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold - an infinity plus review
Paladin of Souls is the second in the fantasy series begun in The Curse of Chalion.
But, in the end, Paladin of Souls is a competent and entertaining fantasy by an author who deserves her fame.
It's not Lois McMaster Bujold's best book, and it is not one of the best fantasies I have recently read, but it is worth spending a few hours on, and I doubt her many fans will be disappointed.

Where Paladin is less consistently surprising and gripping than its predecessor, the firm sense of character and touches of wit come to the fore (Ista's barbed exchanges with the Bastard are brilliant).
Ista is a delightful character - warm, determined, intelligent, and with a great line in wry self-deprecation - and seeing her learn to make choices and take control of her life again is the most enjoyable aspect of the book.
'Paladin of Souls' is an emotionally resonant, gripping, and yet gently domestic fantasy.

Paladin of Souls is Lois McMaster Bujold's latest novel, her third fantasy, and a fairly direct sequel to The Curse of Chalion.
It seems that Bujold's energies are now focussed on her fantasy secondary world, centered on the Royacy of Chalion, which has certain similarities to Renaissance era Iberia.

In the first book, it appeared as if the pantheon might be similar to Christian trinitarianism, but much of Paladin of Souls is spent fleshing out the true extent of the five gods, their relationships one to another, and how they interact with the humans who do and do not worship them.
