 Paul's Palaeo Pages
Palaeogeography is the representation of the Earth's past surface.
It provides the context within which to understand surface processes, the distribution and history of life and as a critical boundary condition for climate and ocean modelling.
But, the link between the geological record revealed at outcrop or in the subsurface and the contemporary geography, is complex, and requires large datasets of geological information and a global perspective. As such it provides the context within which the past history of the Earth is set.

Coastal Evolution, Palaeogeography and Ireland’s Archaeological Heritage
They also indicate that our archaeological heritage is under constant threat of destruction from erosion of coastal bluffs, dunes and intertidal mudflats.
These palaeogeographies (which will be most precise in areas with limited sediment movement and underlain by exposed bedrock) show the separation of Ireland from Britain around 16 000 years ago, and the ongoing evolution of the coastline during the Holocene.
Information of this kind can be used to highlight areas of high archaeological potential, and regions where coastal heritage may be at risk from coastal change.

For our purposes we shall refer more precisely to eastern Beringia, the territory corresponding to those parts of Alaska and the Yukon that, with the exception of several alpine zones, were spared the glacial advances of the Pleistocene.
Spurred on by continuing archaeological questions, interdisciplinary research in the region over the past few decades has enabled us to form a clearer picture of Beringian palaeogeography.
This research has also clarified various aspects of the evolution of the Pleistocene environment to which human populations had to adapt, some of them eventually spreading south.

It was considered however that, because of the predictable hostility towards change, research should be structured towards demonstrating definitive auguments using modern, readily available, empirical data.
It is considered that an expanding Earth model will enable specialist researchers in fields such as palaeontology, palaeogeography, metallogeny, palaeomagnetics and so on to spatially display their global data on a worldwide, or continental scale as required.
It is anticipated that all the specialist fields of geology can be confidently related spatially and temporally to a predictable process of Archaean crustal formation, Proterozoic crustal fragmentation, Proterozoic to Palaeozoic basin development, and Post-Jurassic plate motion history.

This is because leaves absorb carbon dioxide through their stomata, and their density varies as carbon dioxide goes up and down.
"Between AD 1200 to 1300, we see a decrease in stomata and a sharp rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide, due to deforestation we think," says Dr van Hoof, whose findings are published in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.
But after AD 1350, the team found the pattern reversed, suggesting that atmospheric carbon dioxide fell, perhaps due to reforestation following the plague.
