The Palais was built between 1335 and 1364 on a natural rocky outcrop at the northern edge of Avignon, overlooking the river Rhône.
The Palais Vieux was constructed by the architect Pierre Poisson of Mirepoix at the instruction of Pope Benedict XII.
The majority of the Palais is now open to the public; it also houses a large convention centre and the archives of the départment of Vaucluse.

In 1348 Pope Clement VI bought it from Queen Joanna I of Sicily for 80,000 gold gulden, and it remained a papal possession until 1791, when, during the disorder of the French Revolution, it was incorporated with France.
They were not, however, particularly strong fortifications; the Popes relied instead on the immensely strong fortifications of their palace, the "Palais des Papes".
The Notre Dame des Doms cathedral is located in the heart of Avignon, near the Palais des Papes.

Entering the city from the south through the Porte de la Republique, we follow the cours Jean-Jaures and the rue de la Republique to the place de l'Horloge and park our car in the underground garage of the place du Palais des papes.
The Roman forum was located exactly at the actual place de l'Horloge with its Hotel de Ville and theatre.
The famous rock is practically invisible from the place du Palais because its view was "stolen" by the gigantic Palais des Papes that was built later.
