Lugo is a city in northwestern Spain, in the autonomous community of Galicia.
It is the capital of the province of Lugo.
The Diocese of Lugo (Lucensis in Latin) which embraces all the province of Lugo and part of Pontevedra and Coruña in Galicia, Spain, is a suffragan of Santiago de Compostella.

Lugo is the biggest province in Galicia and it has the greatest variety of colours and landscapes.
Its 9,980 Km2 extend from the Cantabrian coast to the Sil basin, and from the mountains which border Asturias to the Cordal Gallega, on the slope to the right of the Miqo The 412.000 inhabitants are spread uniformly around the province with an average density of 40 inhabitants per square kilometre.
In the village, besides the Roman churches of Vilar de Sarria and O Salvador, the tower of the fort still stands since the 15th century, and also some of the old pilgrim hospitals, of which that of the convent of La Magdalena of the 1 6th and 18th centuries is specially noterworthy.

After Lugo’s Roman bridge the route detours from the highway to pass by the chapel of Saint Lazarus and then returns to the old Santiago motor road which, fortunately, is scarcely traveled.
Some pilgrims coming from Lugo stay here as a rest stop before covering the 20 kilometers to Palas de Rei, while others go on the next day directly to Melide which is 28 kilometers away.
There are several detours on the way to Palas de Rei, one of them goes by a huge clay pit, which makes it more advisable to go back to the highway particularly under the heavy rain.

As we left Villafranca del Bierzo, which had a nice castle (belonging to the Alvarez de Toledo family today, but built initially by the Pimentel family [who were renamed “los Marqueses de Villafranca” in 1486 by the crown]), we had a nice, light uphill where we were actually making good speed.
We pushed hard, and instead of a night in a refuge in Arca, we’re now staying at the Parador in Santiago de Compostela, which is the former royal hospital, commissioned for construction by Fernando and Isabel, the Reyes Católicos, in 1492.

You could stop in Palas de Rei but I think it is worth walking the extra 5 Km to Casanova where there is a lovely Refugio run by Carmen, which is usually not crowded.
