The Palau Güell is a palace in Barcelona, Spain designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí for the Catalan industrial tycoon Eusebio de Güell.

At the time of writing (2005), Palau Güell is closed to the public due to renovations; some of the stone used in the original construction was weak and has cracked over the years causing stuctural problems within the building.

The Palau Guell is Gaudi's first major building in the centre of the city and was commissioned by Eusebi Guell I Bacigalupi, the first Count Guell.
It was built between 1886 and 1890 as an extension of the family residence on the Ramblas and was connected to that via a passage.
The Palau Guell is also the first place that Gaudi used his trademark parabolic arch.

The Palau Güell was built as a family home for Eusebi Güell, one of the great patrons of Modernisme.
The Palau was inaugurated for the 1888 Universal Exhibition, work then being stopped and the building finished off afterwards.
The Palau is - unlike the more famous of Gaudí's houses, the Casa Batlló and the Pedrera, for example - very dark inside, the result of extensive use of dark grey marble from Güell's own quarries, down the coast in the Garraf.

To me, these lively, colourful mosaics bear the hallmark of Josep Maria Jujol, the creator of the stunning mosaics in the Parc Guell (such as the bench - see Gallery 1).

If you take a tour of Palau Guell, you are able to go on the roof to see the colorful chimnies that Gaudi created.
Although not quite as colorful as the chimnies of Palau Guell, they have a more fanciful form.
Look closely at the chimney tops, and you should be able to see faces or knights wearing their helmets.
