Pale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pale or the English Pale comprised a region in a radius of 20 miles around Dublin which the English in Ireland gradually fortified against incursion from Gaels.
As well as the Pale in Ireland, the term was applied to various other English colonial settlements, and the Pale of Settlement, the area in the west of Imperial Russia where Jews were permitted to reside.
The Pale boundary essentially consisted of a fortified ditch and rampart built around parts of the medieval counties of Louth, Meath, Dublin and Kildare, actually leaving half of Meath and Kildare on the other side.

JewishEncyclopedia.com - PALE OF SETTLEMENT:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Pale was first established in 1791, when the White-Russian Jews, who had passed under Russian rule (1772) at the first partition of Poland, were forbidden to join merchant or artisan gilds in governments other than those of White Russia.
However, by an imperial decree of 1892 these rights of the veterans and their children were abolished in the case of the city and government of Moscow, except as regards those who were already registered in the artisan gilds there or were members of permanent artisan gilds.
In general, Jews may leave the Pale for a period of six weeks, with an extension to eight weeks, in connection with legal matters, or in order to take possession of property inherited by them, or for commercial purposes, or to submit bids on contracts for work to be done within the Pale.

Questions & Answers: Beyond the pale
A pale is an old name for a pointed stake driven into the ground to form part of a fence and—by obvious extension—to a barrier made of such stakes, a fence (our modern word paling is from the same source, as are pole and impale).
For example, the English pale in France in the fourteenth century was the territory of Calais, the last English possession in that country.
The idea behind it was that civilisation stopped at the boundary of the pale and beyond lay those who were not under civilised control and whose behaviour therefore was not that of gentlemen.

 Beyond the pale
The everyday use of the word pale is as the adjective meaning whitish and light in colour (and used to that effect by Procol Harum and countless paint adverts).
The paling fence is significant as the term pale became to mean the area enclosed by such a fence and later just the figurative meaning of 'the area that is enclosed and safe'.
Pales were enforced in various other European countries for similar political reasons, notably in Ireland (the Pale of Dublin) and France (the Pale of Calais, which was formed as early as 1360).

 MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Paleness
Unless pale skin is accompanied by pale lips, tongue, palms of the hands, inside of the mouth, and lining of the eyes, it is probably not a serious condition, and does not require treatment.
Although generalized paleness (pallor) affects the entire body, it is most apparent on the face, lining of the eyes, inner mouth, and nails.
Paleness may be the result of decreased blood supply to the skin (cold, fainting, shock, hypoglycemia) or decreased number of red blood cells (anemia).

Pale ale is a traditional English style that came about in the 19th Century as a specific term used to describe a "premium" bitter.
Compared to their English cousins, American pale ales tend to be even more hoppy in character with the distinctive floral and spicy flavors of American hops.
The intense hop flavor and aroma of many American pale ales can be attributed to "dry hopping", which is the addition of hops to the beer during its fermenting or conditioning stage.

So, when the pale ale style was invented, it was named "pale" because it was lighter in color.
