Paleoecology uses the data of fossils or subfossils to reconstruct the ecosystems of the past.
Most paleoecological studies focus on the Quaternary Period (the last 2 million years) because older environments are less well represented in the fossil record.
Many have pointed to the importance of using paleoecological studies as a basis for (additional info and facts about conservation ecology) conservation ecology.

 Paleoecology
Paleoecology is the science which deals with fossils as a tool for detecting ancient environments, in which these fossils lived or supposed to have lived and also the associated sediments were deposited.
To define Paleoecology we should first define ecology, which is the study of the interactions of organisms with one another and with the physical environment.
Paleoecology is an important science in serving geology especially in determining the environment of deposition represented in the rock.

Paleoecology is the science of reconstructing how prehistoric ecosystems functioned.
As the shark fossil record consists almost entirely of teeth, understanding the paleoecology of these creatures is fraught with challenges.
In a 1996 paper, paleontologist Robert W. Purdy used the fossil record to explore the paleoecology of Megalodon, the White Shark, and related species in the western North Atlantic.

In 1996 and 1997, funding was received from the Colorado Historical Society to investigate the paleoecology and archaeology of the Upper Gunnison Basin.

Paleoecology is the study of past ecosystems and environments.
The sum of the contributions will demonstrate the main research directions in paleoecology today, as well as the main areas where paleoecology influences "neoecology." This survey will be one catalyst for discussions at an Evening Session on "The Future of Paleoecology" at the 2003 ESA Annual Meeting.
Of special interest are paleoecology studies that use novel approaches to examine current issues in ecology and evolution.

ABSTRACT: Paleoecology of a groundwater outflow using siliceous microfossils.
Paleoecological investigations of sediments deposited downstream of freshwater springs have the potential to reconstruct the environmental history of source aquifers and their catchments, thereby allowing for the study of long-term changes in these important hydrological systems.
These approaches show promise for relating changes in siliceous microfossils to human impacts and natural changes in spring habitats, their catchments and the quality of groundwater.

Although the principles of paleoecology are the same as those underlying modern ecology, the two fields actually differ greatly.
Paleoecology is a historical science that must rely on empirical data from fossils and their enclosing sedimentary rocks to make inferences about past conditions.
The lack of precision is compensated for by the fact that paleoecology deals with processes occurring over vast spans of time that are unavailable to modern ecology.
