Pali, the language in which the canon is written, is a Prakrit (vernacular dialect) of classical Sanskrit (see Prakrit literature).
After the decline of Buddhism in India, Pali literature was preserved in Sri Lanka, where a vast body of commentary and elaboration of the canon developed.
Pali is still written in Sri Lanka and to a lesser extent in SE Asia.

But when Pali first became known to Europeans it was already used also, by those who wrote in Pali, of the language of the later writings, which bear the same relation to the standard literary Pali of the canonical texts as medieval does to classical Latin.
The present writer has suggested that the word Pali should be reserved for the language of the canon, and other words used for the earlier and later forms of it; but the usage generally followed is so convenient that there is little likelihood of the suggestion being followed.
The Pali books written in Ceylon, Burma and Siam will be our best and oldest, and in many respects our only, authorities for the sociology and politics, the literature and the religion, of their respective countries.

Pali is the language of the texts of the Theravadins, an ancient school of Hinayana Buddhism.
This is the result of the great influence Sanskrit exercised on Pali, notably in the 12th century when the texts were revised on the basis of (the Burmese) Pali grammars which were heavily influenced by the works of Panini and other Sanskrit grammarians.

Though, the Pali Text Society is set up in London, the Society never attempted to Anglicise the Buddhist teaching to suit the whims and fancies of some people as it is done particularly in Sri Lanka deliberately and otherwise.
Back to Rhys Davids and the Pali Text Society, the credit must be showered to the husband-wife duo whose pioneering efforts to learn Sinhala and Pali and Buddhist realizing the efficacy of the Buddha word they made an earnest endeavour to propagate the sublime teaching throughout the globe.

The word "Pali" means "text" and its vocabulary has a special significance for the study of Buddhism, because its words have been well defined for the needs of the Buddha's teachings.
Similarly with the Pali word "Kamma", this is the moral law as defined by the Buddha.

The word 'Pali' primarily signifies 'Text' or 'sacred texts' or the text of the Buddhist canon' as opposed to the connentaries, but gradually it bacame the name of the language in which the canon (Tripitika) of the Theravada Buddhism and the ancillary texts were written.
It is, however, certain that the Pali Tipitika grew out of this oral tradition to be modified during the next two centuries in which form it was finally written down in the literary Pali language in the Fourth Council.
Pali literature falls into two main divisions, namely the cannocial literature consisting of three pitakas as mentioned above and the non-canonical or extra canonical texts consisting mainly of the commentaries, sub-commentaries and chronicles besides some classical works including the Milinda-panha.

 Beyond the Tipitaka
A quick glance through the pages of the Pali Text Society's publications catalogue should be enough to convince anyone that there is much more to classical Pali literature than the Tipitaka alone.
First of all, although many of these texts were indeed first written in Pali a thousand years after the Buddha, most Sinhala versions upon which they were based were written much earlier, having themselves been passed down via an ancient and reliable oral tradition.
Most of these titles have been published in romanized Pali by the Pali Text Society (PTS); the few for which English translations are available are noted with a dagger (†), followed by the translator, date of translation, and publisher.

Acariya Buddhaghosa was the greatest commentator on the Pali Buddhist texts, whose Visuddhimagga and commentaries to the canon are regarded as authoritative by Theravada scholars.
Pali was obviously well known as a language of learning, but unfortunately no original texts composed in Sri Ksetra or Thaton have come down to us.
K.R. Norman says: "The greatest of extant Pali grammars is the Saddaniti, written by Aggavamsa from Arimaddana [Pagan] in Burma..."[33] Aggavamsa was also known as the teacher of King Narapatisithu (1167-1202) and was given the title Aggapandita.

This canon was written in a language called Pali, which is believed to have been derived from a dialect used in the region of Magadha.
The Sinhala texts were translated into Pali in the fifth century C.E. The Vinaya section of the Pali canon consists of rules of conduct, most of which are aimed at monks and nuns.
Many of these are derived from specific cases in which the Buddha was asked for a ruling on the conduct of particular members of the order, and the general rules he promulgated still serve as the basis for monastic conduct.

They were widely known in the 3rd century B.C.The Pali work Jataka consists of 550 Jatakas or stories of Buddha's previous births, arranged in 22 nipatas or books.
Each story begins with a preface which explains the circumstances in the Buddha's life which led him to relate this particular Jataka or birth-story, and so reveal the story of one of his numerous previous births as a bodhisattva (one meant to become the Buddha).
Both literature and history, the Jataka is a treasure house of Indian heritage.

Oral literature in the vernacular languages of India is of great antiquity, but it was not until about the 16th cent.
Among the Muslims classical Persian poetry was the fountainhead of a later growth in the Urdu literature produced for the Mughal court, and elaborate Urdu verse on set themes was produced in abundance.
Today there is a written literature in all the important languages of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as a large literature in English intended to reach all the university-educated public regardless of native language.

After the publication of The New Pali Course the need for a higher Pali Course was keenly felt by students.
This Higher Pali Course is to be considered as Part III of The New Pali Course, but I have changed the name as this portion is meant only for the advanced students and not for the beginners.
As there is no mention of analysis in any of the old Pali Grammars I have had to follow the way of the English Grammars and to invent a new method of treating Pali sentences.
