North of the Philippine Province of South Cotabato is Sultan Kudarat in Region XII, Central Mindanao.
Sultan Mohammed Dipatuan Kudarat of Maguindanao ruled most of Mindanao in the first half of the seventeenth century, and extended his authority north into the Visayas and southwest through the Sulus to the coast of Borneo.
The Province of Sultan Kudarat, created in 1973, was originally designated for inclusion in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, but opted out by popular vote in 1989.

COTABATO CITY -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is investigating the alleged involvement of some of its officials in illegal logging operations in Palimbang town, Sultan Kudarat province.
In a press statement, Jim Sampulna, DENR director for Central Mindanao, said there was an ongoing "administrative proceeding to warrant the filing of charges against the perpetrators for violation of PD 705," the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines.
The apprehension of some 32,021 board feet of cut lumbers by a team of local police and members of the DENR district office in Kalamansig town, Sultan Kudarat also on Jan. 8 prompted the deployment of the investigative team, Sampulna said.
