As he sat watching the stars, with his hand on the helm, Somnus sent by Neptune approached in the guise of Phorbas and said: “Palinurus, the breeze is fair, the water smooth, and the ship sails steadily on her course.
I will stand at the helm in your place.” Palinurus replied, “Tell me not of smooth seas or favoring winds,—me who have seen so much of their treachery.

GradeSaver: ClassicNote: The Aeneid Study Guide
Palinurus is one of Aeneas’s most trusted companions: a truly honorable, courageous, loyal man. Even the very best men, it seems, are not rewarded for their valor if such rewards do not serve the dictates of fate.
Palinurus is not even rewarded in death; in Book VI, Aeneas will find his comrade’s shade wandering in misery alongside other unburied, restless souls.
Although the sibyl of Cumae assures Palinurus that his corpse will one day be put to rest, it is clear that Palinurus is expendable, and even his good deeds in life do not guarantee him happiness or peace in death.

Palinurus was the ill fated pilot of Aeneas' ship (Virgil's Aeneid) who fell into the sea while he slept.
Yet this is the enticing manner of Palinurus: Many words, and their order, are so familiar to us that we instantly take refuge in the self identity that we find.
Although Palinurus wants to see himself as the eternally pessimistic critic, his incredibly beguiling wit shines through the murky doubt, his cheeky grin and enticing laughter lets us forget the bleakness of the reality...

Research Paper on Significance of Palinurus
Virgil’s Use of Palinurus In writing The Aeneid, Virgil subtly describes his perspective of the Roman civilization through various means, primarily through the characters in his epic.
Thus, the death of Palinurus is significant because Virgil uses him to strengthen his point that Rome is not and cannot be a great empire.
Palinurus is the key to the understanding of Virgil’s point of view toward the Roman society.

Here we investigate the origin of the bright green coloration of the wing scales of the Indonesian male Papilio palinurus butterfly, the microstructure of which generates an extraordinary combination of both yellow and blue iridescence.
The dual colour arises from a modulation imposed on the multilayer, producing the blue component as a result of a previously undiscovered retro-reflection process.

Fecundity increased linearly with increasing CL, and was significantly lower in length-classes >80mm CL at Port Alfred than on the Agulhas Bank and Mossel Bay to Algoa Bay, where it was similar.

Palinurus’ reliability as a helmsman and his knowledge of the stars and the winds have been focused on from time to time.
Moreover as his last words reveal, Palinurus trusts neither “fickle breezes” nor “the treachery of the calm” the implication is that he has insulted the gods unlike Cloanthus, who begs Neptune and the sea gods to help him win the race.
The supreme irony of his drowning is that Aeneas, for whose benefit Palinurus refuses to relax his alertness, thinks that the helmsman died due to his complacence at the calmness of the sea.

Type locality of Astacus elephas Fabricius, 1787 (and Palinurus quadricornis Fabricius, 1798): the original statement of the type locality "Habitat in Americae meridionalis Insulis" is erroneous.
The type was bought at the fish market of Trieste, Italy (for 2 florins) from a fisherman from Rovinj: "Non aliter, quam duorum florenorum pretio hunc mihi Tergestino in foro Cancrumpiscator vendidit Rovignensis" (Wulfen, 1791: 314); its present whereabouts unknown.
In the central and western Mediterranean the species is regularly found at fishmarkets, and in the eastern Atlantic, outside the Mediterranean, it is fished on a minor scale in England, and more intensively in France and Portugal.
