 Palisades Interstate Parkway
To respond to this threat, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC) was formed in 1900 by the New York and New Jersey state legislatures "to provide for the selection, location, appropriation and management of the certain lands along the Palisades of the Hudson River for an interstate park".
The Palisades Interstate Parkway is exceptionally significant in the themes of conservation, recreation, transportation and regional planning for its role in the conservation of a significant endangered landscape, the development and promotion of recreation, and regional land use planning.
Beginning in 1900 with the formation of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC), the states of New York and New Jersey commenced a cooperative effort to acquire and preserve a large tract of the Palisades that was threatened by quarrying operations.

Even the drive to the Palisades is one of the ugliest in New Jersey.

The Palisades form the eastern edge of a sill made up of intrusive lava known as diabase or traprock that was intruded during the Triassic period (approximately 200 million years ago).
At several locations on the Palisades Ridge, most notably on South Mountain at the northern end and at the cliff edge in New Jersey, there are examples of dry grass and forb-dominated openings classified by New Jersey as traprock glade/rock outcrop communities and by New York as rocky summit grasslands.

The Palisades region of the Sierra Nevada is located west of the town of Big Pine.
You can clearly see the Palisades in front of you (North Palisade is the one in the middle, the third tallest mountain in California) and Mt Sill to their left (it looks like a fist from this angle, but it is actually more like a pyramid).
