Hoboken, New Jersey Encyclopedia Article @ HotAndCold.com (Hot and Cold)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Hoboken was originally an island, surrounded by the Hudson River on the east and a swamp at the foot of the New Jersey Palisades on the west.
The new city experienced a boom in population and employment during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company, founded by Colonel Stevens in 1838 and managed by his heirs, laid out a regular system of streets, blocks and lots, constructed housing, and developed manufacturing sites.
The Hoboken waterfront is the western shore of the Hudson from Newark Street to Stevens Institute of Technology, sandwiched by the Lincoln Tunnel to the north and the Holland Tunnel to the south, directly across from Lower Manhattan's Canal Street.

New Jersey Palisades - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Palisades, also called the New Jersey Palisades or the Hudson Palisades, are a line of steep cliffs along the west side of the lower Hudson River in northeast New Jersey and southern New York in the United States.
The cliffs are among the most dramatic geologic features in the vicinity of New York City, forming a canyon of the Hudson north of Fort Lee, as well as providing a dramatic vista of the New York City skyline from the opposite bank of the Hudson.
The cliffs are the margin of a diabase sill, formed approximately 200 million years ago at the close of the Triassic Period by the intrusion of molten magma upward into sandstone.

To respond to this threat, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC) was formed in 1900 by the New York and New Jersey state legislatures "to provide for the selection, location, appropriation and management of the certain lands along the Palisades of the Hudson River for an interstate park".
The Palisades Interstate Parkway is exceptionally significant in the themes of conservation, recreation, transportation and regional planning for its role in the conservation of a significant endangered landscape, the development and promotion of recreation, and regional land use planning.
Beginning in 1900 with the formation of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC), the states of New York and New Jersey commenced a cooperative effort to acquire and preserve a large tract of the Palisades that was threatened by quarrying operations.

Whatever Rosenthal's plan, Palisades became an institution, outlasting state-of-the-art competitors like Freedomland precisely because it was a slice of Middle America.
But after Palisades closed in 1971, many came to feel that its musical signature and finest epitaph was its ad jingle, written by Rosenthal's wife, Gladys Shelley, sung by Steve Clayton and featured on New York radio perhaps a million times in the 1960s:
