  Jamaica Gleaner - Saving the Palisadoes - Wednesday | August 31, 2005
Smith and Warner concerning the protection of the Palisadoes road with great interest, and agree that the kind of solution that they propose is the most appropriate one at this time.
We would also like to point out that, although it is more exposed than other parts of the Palisadoes to the fury of tropical storms and hurricanes, this narrow, eastern part has been in existence for a long time, probably extending into thousands of years.
One cannot compare the erosion problems of the Palisadoes spit with, say, the problems experienced along the east coast of North America, where massive, storm-induced breaches are frequently made in the soft, unconsolidated sand of the barrier islands.

Historical Events - Port Royal, Jamaica, 1692   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The initial British settlement of Jamaica during the latter part of the 17th Century was concentrated on a long sandspit extending across the mouth of Kingston harbour, known as the Palisadoes.
Although the Palisadoes sandspit subsequently reestablished itself and Port Royal was partially rebuilt, the focus of settlement on Jamaica subsequently moved to Kingston, built on higher ground and less unstable foundations.
The new Palisadoes sandspit was partially liquefied again by an earthquake on January 14th, 1907, which also caused severe damage in Kingston, and around 1200 deaths.

Selections from the Diary of Private Joseph Plumb Martin
In front of the stone wall, for about half its length, was another embankment, with palisadoes on the inside of it, and a narrow ditch between them and the stone wall.
Between the stone wall and the palisadoes was a kind of yard or pen, at the southern end of which was a narrow entrance not more than eight or ten feet wide, with a ditch about four feet wide in the middle, extending the whole length of the pen.
The soldiers were all ordered to take their posts at the palisadoes, which they were ordered to defend to the last extremity, as it was expected the British would land under the fire of their cannon and attempt to storm the fort.

Cowell Lyn: ZoomInfo Business People Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Lyn explained that the Palisadoes is particularly vulnerable to hurricane disruption and outlined three main factors which contributed to this.
Lyn noted that the geological/geotechnical composition of the Palisadoes or the tombolo, as it is more properly known, was formed over time by littoral transport of terrigenous sediments.
According to him, "the most appropriate form of shore protection for the weaker, more vulnerable sections of the Palisadoes would be installations of carefully designed revetments finished with outside armouring consisting of modern, pre-cast concrete, inter-locking units".
