Pallas was born in Berlin, the son of a Professor of Surgery.
In 1767 Pallas was invited by Catherine II of Russia to became a professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and between 1769 and 1774 he led an expedition to Siberia collecting natural history specimens on their behalf.
In 1772 Pallas was shown a 700 kilogram lump of metal which had been found near to the city of Krasnoyarsk.

Peter Simon Pallas (September 22, 1741 - September 8, 1811) was a German-born Russian zoologist.
This new type of meteorites are called Pallasites after him whereas the meteorite itself is today named Krasnoyarsk or sometimes also called Pallas Iron (the name given to it by Ernst Chladni in 1794).
A number of animals are named after him, including Pallas's Cat, Pallas's Warbler, Pallas's Gull, Pallas's Sandgrouse and Pallas's Reed Bunting.

The sight of a flock of Snow Buntings tumbling down to rest with their white wings flashing makes it obvious why they are sometimes given the country name of Snowflakes.
In winter some Snow Buntings can look surprisingly drab on the ground, but most show rather gingery brown colours with variable amounts of white visible on their bellies and wings and around their faces.
Breeds throughout the tundra areas of Scandinavia but is generally much harder to find than the Lapland Bunting, perhaps because they require the stonier areas which tend to be mostly around the summits of hills.

The extremely rare Pallas Reed Bunting can be excluded aswell, because they would show a paler rump and perhaps a yellowish tone to the white nape, as Brian Stone correctly mentioned.
Therefore it must be a Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus).

The primary purpose of our visit was the hope to find Jankowski's Bunting, a Chinese near-endemic now listed as Vulnerable by Birdlife International (2000).
Rather little is known about this species — sometimes called Rufous-backed Bunting — although it was a Chinese researcher who took us to this singing male (right), so someone is doing studies.
It is a beautiful little bunting with a prominent belly patch.

Dusky Warbler Phylloscopus fuscatus.  One heard on 10th in reeds at the Geum River constitutes presumably the first winter record in Korea (a second was found in January 2002 on the south coast)
Yellow-throated Bunting Emberiza elegans.  Korea’s commonest breeding bunting.  Also very numerous in winter in suitable habitat.
Pallas’s Reed Bunting Emberiza pallasi.  Typically rather numerous.  Surprisingly, only recorded on 3 dates, with 4 on 10th the maximum.

We landed on the riverbank and discovered a large area of reeds, which quickly produced Japanese Marsh Warbler.

In the vicinity of the reserve were several other birds exotic to us, most notably Ruddy Crake, Water Rail, Painted Snipe, Long-toed Stint, Red-throated Pipit, Little Bunting and Daurian Jackdaw.
We couldn't find the Eurasian Spoonbill which had been in the area (tidal?).
We ran out of time and couldn't find any of the starlings or Pallas's Reed Bunting.
