Pallbearer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pallbearer is a person who helps carry the casket of a deceased person from a religious service or viewing to their final resting place, or to and from the hearse which does so.
A pall is the heavy cloth that is draped over a coffin; by metonymy the term pallbearer is used to signify someone who bears the coffin which the pall covers.
Pallbearers were usually associated in an intimate manner (such as brother, uncle, father, or husband - pallbearers are not always male, but male pallbearers are the most common) with the deceased before their death, though this is not always the case.

The first 30 minutes of The Pallbearer possessed the quirky rhythm, and dark humor that I think more films need to have, but this disappeared as quickly as it arrived.
Reeves' style of direction, with the particularly fascinating use of scenes with only a haunting piano composition playing softly in the background was solid, but his script wasn't as lucky.

It helps to remember, in considering Matt Reeves' debut film "The Pallbearer," that almost 30 years ago, Mike Nichols' "The Graduate" was dismissed in some influential quarters as a common exploitation picture.
It will require time and lots of it to tell whether "The Pallbearer" has such staying power, but for now this understated and modest film seems to be concerned more with what it's like to be young and disoriented -- period -- than with what it's like to be a mixed-up twentysomething in the 1990s.
Tom's life changes for the weirder when a woman he has never met summons him to be a pallbearer at the funeral of her son -- evidently a classmate whom Tom cannot remember.

Matt Reeves' The Pallbearer is loaded with none-to-subtle references to Mike Nichols' 1967 classic, The Graduate.

 The Pallbearer - Movie Review
Schwimmer's first outing, The Pallbearer, doesn't venture too far from the Friends tree, as we are presented with a big romantic comedy that borders on television kitschiness, full of screwball humor and plenty of misunderstandings to fuel the plot.
In fact, the entire premise of The Pallbearer is driven by one big misunderstanding itself: Tom Thompson (Schwimmer) is asked to give the eulogy at the funeral of Bill Abernathy, a guy from high school who he doesn't even remember.
While this isn't too bad with The Pallbearer, it does happen on occasion, mainly because of director Matt Reeves letting the film wallow in Tom's self-pity far too often.

Clearly intended to be a Generation X version of The Graduate (1967), this dark comedy is a notable debut for writer/director Matt Reeves.
While thankfully avoiding the annoying blitzkrieg of pop culture references that often punctuate slacker cinema, The Pallbearer (1996) is no less obsessed with the iconography of mass media, employing its fixations with more subtlety.
David Schwimmer is engagingly funny in his debut as a neurotic leading boy/man even as he overly channels his Ross character from the TV hit Friends, while Gwyneth Paltrow is a nice romantic foil, although her character remains slightly underdeveloped despite some hinted-at complexities.

 BMN Review: Pallbearer, The (1996)
I forgot David Schwimmer and “The Pallbearer.” Make that a resounding, “NO!” While LeBlanc’s cinematic excursions have easily been the bottom scum of the “Friends” motion picture slop trough, Schwimmer’s “Pallbearer” does not rise much higher.
The first thing anyone who watches “The Pallbearer” will notice is that David Schwimmer is a one-dimensional actor.
If Reeves and his co-writer Jason Katims had made Julie the central character, “The Pallbearer” may have been a very good movie, but then they probably wouldn’t have been able to draw a Friend to the cast and that would’ve undermined the studio’s whole marketing strategy.

The Pallbearer is the umpteenth variation on the Oedipal conflicts made famous in Mike Nichols's The Graduate, but it doesn't have the imagination, vitality, or authority to take classic themes about growing up all the way to the finish line.
