Pallid Harrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus) is a migratory bird of prey of the harrier family.
This is a typical harrier, with long wings held in a shallow V in its low flight.
Pallid Harriers hunt small mammals, lizards and birds, surprising them as they drift low over fields and moors.

 ID Issues
The first step in correctly identifying a "ringtail" harrier is to determine the age of the bird.
Pallid has three dark bars evenly spaced, but diffuse and not well developed, with inner two narrower than trailing edge.
Includes great detail on the identification of Montagu's and Pallid Harriers, Steppe and Tawny Eagles, Greater and Lesser Sand Plovers, etc. Hadoram Shirihai is widely recognised as one of the top field birders and identification experts in the Western Palearctic.

 Pallid Harrier, Circus macrourus
Pallid Harriers hunt either singly or in small groups across open plains.
Their preferred habitats are open grassy plains or dry steppes and they are equally at home in flat or undulating territory.
Although not globally threatened their numbers have declined dramatically in areas where the habitat is being exploited by man (most notably in S Ukraine and SW Russia).

To monitor the number of harriers, in particular the endangered Pallid Harrier, using the Aammiq Marsh as a roosting site during their migration and over-wintering.
The second scenario appears to be have an influence on Marsh Harriers who use the reed beds to roost until the reed shoots mature and become too strong to be suitable.
All the harriers used their own ‘hare-like’ form when roosting in the vegetation and the individual sites were at least 5 m.

 Circus macrourus
The juvenile birds are almost as distinctive; their skinny shape and rufous colours are reminiscent of juvenile Montagu's Harriers but the head pattern, especially the broad, dark, half-collar around the nape is most striking.
The dark ear patch on a Pallid Harrier continues far enough under the eye to connect up with the bill and is competely surrounded by a pale ring at the rear.
In a Montagu's Harrier, the face pattern is less contrasting and the pale, not dark, moustachial area gives them a gentler expression.

The changes in the immediate post-death stage have received the most attention for two reasons - firstly it is the stage mostly likely to be seen by the living and secondly because of the research of forensics in potential crimes.
Soon after death (15 to 120 minutes depending on various factors) the body begins to cool (algor mortis), becomes pallid (pallor mortis), and internal sphincter muscles relax leading to the release of urine, feces, and stomach contents if the body is moved.
The blood moves to pool in the lowest parts of the body, livor mortis (dependent lividity), within thirty minutes and then begins to coagulate.
