Palliser Bay is located at the southern end of the North Island of New Zealand, to the southeast of Wellington.
It runs for 40 kilometres along the Cook Strait coast from Turakirae Head at the southern end of the Rimutaka Ranges to Cape Palliser, the North Island's southernmost point.
Inland from the bay is the plain of the Ruamahanga River, which has its outflow in the bay.

It was along this same bit of coast in 1844 that Charles Bidwell and two fellow settlers drove a flock of Merino sheep around the coast of Wellington Harbour and into Palliser Bay, to form New Zealand's first sheep stations in the Wairarapa valley.
When they got to Mukamuka Rocks on the western side of Palliser Bay, each of the 350 sheep had to picked up and handed down to a man waiting in the surf, who piggy-backed it for about half a kilometre to the beach beyond.

However, a dispute in which a woman of Ngati Hinewaka was killed led to the decimation of the hapu of the offender and eventual control of the Cape Palliser district by Ngati Hinewaka (Te Whaiti 1994).
That immediately surrounding the Cape Palliser lighthouse was recently returned to Ngati Hinewaka (14 December 1993) after being taken forcibly by the Crown in 1897 for the building of the lighthouse.
Leach and Leach (1979) concluded that the settlements in Palliser Bay were eventually abandoned in the early 16th century, due to a decline in climatic conditions which made kumara (Ipomoea batatas) and gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) culture marginal, in addition to the depletion of other important food reserves.

On 5 June the schooner was totally wrecked in Fitzroy Bay with the loss of all on board.
On 15 April the dismasted waterlogged wreck of the schooner was discovered by the Maoris on the shore in Fitzroy Bay.
She wrecked on a reef on the western side of the bay.Captained and owed by John Young Hogarth, and built in Stewart Island in 1872.

Hoani Paraone (Brown) Tunuiarangi was born probably in 1843 or 1844 in the Whakatomotomo valley near Palliser Bay in southern Wairarapa.
Tunuiarangi was a representative of Wairarapa Maori at the preliminary sessions of the Kotahitanga movement in the Bay of Islands in 1892; he claimed to have been a supporter of Raniera Te Wharerau's proposal to use the Treaty of Waitangi to protect Maori and to regulate future relations between Maori and Pakeha.
He established a school at Turanganui, near his Pirinoa property in 1901, was chosen to administer the Wairarapa lake reserves, and in 1907 attempted to interest the government in purchasing part of Whangaimoana in Palliser Bay as compensation for the loss of the lakes.

At some time in the eleventh or twelfth century, they worked together to build stone walls in the Palliser Bay area, to hold back the rich soil and to shelter their crops of kumara from the southerly winds.
There is evidence that while the practice of using fire to remove vegetation for gardening may have had an effect, the two earthquakes accelerated erosion and the exposure of gardens to the strong winds of the coast.

The men on the ship feared she was about to break up so they took to the lifeboats, carefully carrying the body of the dying pilot with them.
The boat was rowed clear of the ship, but the captain realised from the sound of the breaking surf that a landing in the rocky bay was too dangerous and the little boat was rowed eight miles westwards before a landing could be effected.
But the Ben Avon still had a role to play in maritime history and she managed to cause another ship to be wrecked on the Palliser Bay rocks.
