PALLIUM OR PALL - LoveToKnow Article on PALLIUM OR PALL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A pallium thus consecrated is placed by the archdeacon over the shoulders of the pope at his coronation, with the words " Receive the pallium," i.e.
The first recorded example of the bestowal of the pallium by the popes is the grant of Pope Symmachus in 513 to Caesarius of Aries, as papal vicar.
Though the pallium is thus a vestment distinctive of bishops having metropolitan jurisdiction, it may only be worn by them within their jurisdiction, and then only on certain solemn occasions.

The six-layered neocortex, which evidently evolved as a result of the integration of the reptilian general pallium and the dorsal ventricular ridge, must be viewed as a major structural innovation of the mammalian brain.
However, the anterior extent of the sulcus limitans is poorly defined, and appears to move ventrally at its rostral end; thus, the entire prosencephalon is arguably derived from the dorsal (sensory) alar plate.
Compared to the amphibian brain, the most immediately apparent differences are the greatly expanded cerebral hemispheres, and the appearance of a thickened volume of neuropil on the ventricular surface of the lateral wall of each hemisphere, known as the dorsal ventricular ridge.

Sensory processing in the pallium of a mormyrid fish   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The pallium is a general term for a mantle of gray matter that covers the telencephalon.
Although, the pallium is one of the most intensely studied structures in mammals, in nonmammalian brain physiology it is perhaps the most neglected.
Before recent anatomical tracer studies, the teleost pallium was considered to bedominated by olfactory input and involved primarily in mechanisms of arousal (Ito and Kishida, 1978; Finger, 1980), and in sequencing of elementary "fixed action patterns"(Segaar, 1961; De Bruin, 1980).

Nearly everything written in anatomy textbooks about the brains of birds is wrong, they say.
The avian brain is as complex, flexible and inventive as any mammalian brain, they argue, and it is time to adopt a more accurate nomenclature that reflects a new understanding of the anatomies of bird and mammal brains.
For example, the bird's seat of intelligence or its higher brain is now termed the pallium.
