Topic: Palm IIIx

The Palm IIIx and Palm V (EasyPrint)
Palm's thought is that Palm device fans will go out and buy the new model of their choice, and pass their time-tested companion along to another family member.
Outwardly, the Palm IIIx is a twin to the Palm III.
The Palm V's icons are identical to the earlier models, but the Palm IIIx's iconsare somewhat smaller, do not have labels, and the pictures are drawn in more of a straight-on view, rather than curved.

Palm V and Palm IIIx - Oct/Nov '99   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The Palm V is a great example of how to dramatically improve the device's form, while maintaining the functionality that has made it so successful.
But the Palm IIIx's 4 MB of memory becomes much more important if you are loading databases or larger collections such as books, Web pages/clippings or statutes, for example.
This is a necessity for many Palm V users, as it contains an AC adapter and charger that is supposed to automatically adjust to all the various voltages and frequencies worldwide, plus three international plug adapters, and a hotsync cable (not a cradle) so you can sync with your laptop on the road.

Palm IIIx Handheld by PALM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Setting up the Palm IIIx was easy--we just inserted two batteries, connected the cradle to a desktop PC serial port, dropped in the software CD-ROM, and followed the installation wizard.
The Palm IIIx is PC- and Mac-compatible (an inexpensive MacPac connection kit is required for Mac users), and, as with the PalmPilot Professional, the Palm IIIx uses the industry-acclaimed HotSync technology to exchange data with your desktop PC.
With its increased memory and OS 3.1, the Palm IIIx is a great evolutionary step in the Palm line.

Review: Palm IIIx palmtop computer and GoType keyboard
The Palm VII is a III with added not-terribly-useful radio communication, but the IIIx is where it's at for price-performance at the moment.
The IIIx, in contrast, runs on a mere two AAA cells, which is what's powered Palms ever since they were called Pilots (the Pilot Pen Company of America raised a stink and got the name changed, and U.S. Robotics merged with 3Com, so the USR Pilot eventually begat the 3Com Palm).
The Palm IIIx, V and VII have, at their core, a Motorola MC68EZ328 Dragonball EZ, the updated version of the original MC68328 Dragonball that powered all of the earlier Palms and Pilots.

Palm Boulevard: Hardware Reviews: Palm V vs Palm IIIx
One of the biggest differences between the Palm IIIx and the Palm V is, of course, their looks.
Although the Palm III was supposed to support flash upgrades to its operating system, it seems that there is no way to upgrade to the 3.1 version of the current models without a hardware purchase.
To sum it up, the Palm IIIx and Palm V are superior in several ways to the Palm III and, of course, superior in many ways to earlier generations of Palm computers.

PC Pro: Product Reviews: Palm IIIx
The Palm V (reviewed issue 54, p167) is a slim, sleek unit aimed at the executive market, while the IIIx is targeted at existing users who may have PalmPilot or Palm III peripherals such as modems or GSM adaptors with which it is, unlike the Palm V, plug compatible.
The strength of the Palm platform lays not just in the robustness and speed of the hardware (there's never the lag when switching applications common on Windows CE devices) but the wealth of third-party software: Web browsers and spreadsheets, or games and system hacks, they all add functionality.
The Palm IIIx is suited to the more adventurous user and, while it doesn't have Palm V's pose factor, it retains all the strengths of previous ones.

3Com ships Palm V, Palm IIIx | The Register
Palm Computing ended months of speculation today when it released the long-awaited Palm V and the Palm IIIx.
The Palm IIIx is the essentially a Palm III with and extra 2MB of memory (for a total of 4MB) of memory and a new internal expansion port which appears to be just the III's internal RAM slot, possibly with modified voltage lines to support devices that need more power than RAM does.
The reduced thickness is down to the Palm V's built-in Lithium Ion battery, which is recharged via the device's cradle, but it comes at the cost of memory: just 2MB in total.

While the more expensive Palm V sports an elegant, anodized aluminum case and a skinny form factor, the Palm IIIx is practically identical to the older, heftier Palm III.
At first glance, the Palm IIIx appears to be an exact replica of the Palm III: both are 4.7 by 3.3 inches.
The Palm IIIx's memory is not only double that of the Palm III (and the Palm V), but the memory is now located on the motherboard, not a separate card.
